Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed?
Reflecting on my journey as an artist, I’ve seen my work evolve significantly over time. Initially, I was focused on mastering techniques and exploring various mediums. As I delved deeper into my cultural roots and personal experiences, my art began to take on more profound themes and narratives. I started incorporating elements from Yoruba culture, exploring concepts of identity, heritage, and spirituality. This journey of self-discovery has brought a deeper meaning to my work, allowing me to create art that not only resonates with me but also connects with others on a deeper level.
What role do you think the artist has in today’s society?
In today’s society, artists play a crucial role as historians, storytellers, visionaries, and catalysts for change. We have the power to provoke thought, evoke emotions, and challenge perspectives through our creations. Artists can shine a light on social issues, advocate for marginalized communities, and inspire conversations that lead to meaningful dialogue and action.
What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist?
To stay true to yourself and your artistic vision. Embrace your uniqueness, explore different techniques and mediums, and never stop learning and experimenting. To trust his/her intuition and don’t be afraid to take risks or make mistakes—they are all part of the creative journey.
Does age matter in art? Why or why not?
Age doesn’t matter in art; because creativity knows no boundaries of age. Whether you’re young or old, what truly matters is the passion, dedication, and vision you bring to your art.Being an artist is a lifelong journey of learning, exploring, and evolving, and artists of all ages have the ability to create meaningful and impactful work.
What can we look forward to from you next?
You can look forward to a continuation of my exploration of themes deeply rooted in my cultural heritage and personal experiences. I’m excited to delve further into the essence of African culture, spirituality, and the interconnectedness of humanity. A fusion of traditional techniques with contemporary expressions, as I continue to push the boundaries of my artistic practice.Stay tuned for upcoming exhibitions, collaborations, and new bodies of work that aim to inspire, provoke thought, and celebrate the beauty of humanity.
Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life?
Being an artist later in life, I’ve come to appreciate the depth of experience, wisdom, and perspective that comes with age. My journey of self-discovery and continuous growth, where my every moment and encounter adds layers of richness to my artistic expression. One thing I’d like to share is the importance of embracing change and staying open to new possibilities. I believe age should never be a barrier to creativity; instead, it should be a source of inspiration and a testament to the enduring passion for art.
