What keeps you excited in the studio?
As an expressionist painter I never have an idea where I am going to end up when I start a painting. So each painting is a NEW adventure into the unknown . Each one is unique. This keeps me on my toes. Even after FOUR decades.
Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed?
I would say I have become more confident in the “not knowing”….and in letting the process reveal itself as it wants to. Making art is a dance between the canvas and myself….and that dialogue has become more refined.
What role do you think the artist has in today’s society?
I believe more than ever the world needs authenticity and poetry and beauty. The artist provides those things.
What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist?
Stay true to yourself…. always keep pushing the envelope and make sure to allow for the element of play and surprise and serendipity.
Does age matter in art? Why or why not?
I don’t think so.. Each artist is unique and has their own trajectory. Some artists find their voice early while for others their time comes later in life.
What can we look forward to from you next?
I have just finished a body of large scale paintings called “Abstract Landscapes” and am looking for the perfect gallery to show them in.
Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life?
For me there is a spaciousness now which I didn’t always have when i was younger . And I know… that no matter what… everything is going to be OK….Perhaps now it is easier to take risks…..as I know I have less time.
