Anne Olsen Daub – Art and Cake

September 28, 2024 - Art

Anne Olsen Daub
San Pedro, CA
Age 67

What keeps you excited in the studio?
Thoughts and ideas. Materials and possibilities. A deadline is good.

Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed?
I have been making jewelry since childhood. My educational background is in fine art and fashion design. I was a designer in the fashion industry and have had a career at Mattel toys designing fashions and new doll concepts for Barbie. These work and life experiences have given me the multiple skills needed for my art, sculpture and jewelry design.
I have created large scale paintings, assemblage sculpture pieces, corrugated paper sculptures and had a shop in an antique mall.

I became a collector of unique items and found new life for old objects along the way.
My passion of making one of a kind found object hand made jewelry has lead me to create my current body of work in large scale. Made by hand, I created oversized large and small sculptures of jewels specifically for my exhibition at PVArt Center in February-April 2024. Sculptures are made from recycled materials, unique found objects, mixed media and inspired by history, humor, Victorian ideas, size, color, shape and reflection.

For me, Inspiration comes from just about everywhere. I see potential and endless ideas and possibilities in many things. Age has allowed me perspective to have courage to succeed and fail and develop my art into a meaningful body of work that continues on.

What role do you think the artist has in today’s society?
For the viewer. Pure Joy. Social. Political. Satire. Inspiration. Engage. Think.

What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist?
Follow your passion. Create for you. Try new ideas. Look and See.

Does age matter in art? Why or why not?
No. I believe the older one gets the more experience and depth a person brings to their work in art and life.

What can we look forward to from you next?
Continued ideas, exploration in jewels, materials and sculpture.

Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life?
Continuing new meaning in my work. Fun.
