Beth Elliott – Art and Cake

September 18, 2024 - Art

me in my studio with “Lifeboat: The Wedding” and other works

Beth Elliott
San Pedro , CA
Age 80

What keeps you excited in the studio?
Experimenting and making new connections, new discoveries, forging new paths as I create my installation world.

Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed?
I have gradually expanded breadth of materials and depth of concept while holding a constant thread of intertwining connections. Humor, experimentation & depth of meaning are always present. I find references to early works coming through in playful ways.
My work was influenced along the way by forays into clothing design and working in the film industry.
I am an installation artist beginning before I knew the word installation in order to keep bodies of work from being spread out and separated while still making works that can stand alone.

What role do you think the artist has in today’s society?
Art’s roll in society is to pique curiosity, offer food for thought, see life in new ways, question norms, seek truth, make connections not previously noticed, interact with one another, delight the eye and possibly instill existential joy!

What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist?
Follow your own path. Keep working and growing. Don’t be limited by others ideas of what you do or what you should be doing. Maintain a sense of humor and fun!

Does age matter in art? Why or why not?
No. An artist is as old or young as their art is growing, experimenting and seeking.

What can we look forward to from you next?
“Ocean S.O.S.” new series of cyanotype on fragile tissue dress patterns adhered to tulle and a continuing expansion of the “Lifeboat” series.

Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life?
Art makes for a wonderful, engaged, thoughtful, interesting, fun filled life!
