What keeps you excited in the studio?
My vivid imagination for creating ways to use collected treasures and discarded objects to form unique new assemblage art.
Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed?
My art now tells a story of significance relative to interpreting past cultural beliefs or events. It is not longer pretty fluff.
What role do you think the artist has in today’s society?
To represent an unspoken point of view that is provocative.
What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist?
Make a mark every day!!! Do something artful to keep your mind and hand focused on what’s in your heart. This is the beginning of a journey that has no map but unlimited routes for exploration. The expression of your art is your choice and it is totally yours to decide.
Does age matter in art? Why or why not?
Aging is a great benefit as it allows time to start over – again and again. New beginnings are marked with inspiration. Everything old becomes new again.
What can we look forward to from you next?
Everyday is a surprise involving a vivid imagination for treasures and found objects to be assembled with reference to what speaks to my eyes, ears and heart.
Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life?
I feel deeply fulfilled and informed from these lead-up years to 77. It’s now especially satisfying to disengage from the press of business, commitments, and social expectations to concentrate on my artistic expression. To be able to utilize my 50 year’s of travel treasures (often referred to as Carole’s stuff) in my art assemblages is particularly meaningful. It helps me bear witness to incredibly joyful memories. Through my art everything old becomes new again to share with others. Working alone in solitude is very affirming for me, as I am assured I can do it! I am content.
