Cathi Milligan
Los Angeles, CA
Age 60
What keeps you excited in the studio?
Experimenting.
Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed?
I keep getting better at the medium, even when it doesn’t work.
What role do you think the artist has in today’s society?
Artists create something from nothing. Not nothing, but we conjure ideas, and figure out how to communicate those ideas best.
What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist?
Don’t be afraid of being afraid. And do a lot of things. Become well rounded as an artist and a human.
Does age matter in art? Why or why not?
Age does matter. We get better as we age and that should be appreciated. Youth is a wonderful thing, but so is being older, and knowing more about yourself, and what you are doing.
What can we look forward to from you next?
More glass art. Bigger work. And teaching the next generation of glass artists.
Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life?
I can’t think of any other way to be.
