What keeps you excited in the studio?
I get excited to explore and try out new techniques and create in new ways even after twenty years something new will excite me. I think it’s that childlike quality in me that comes to life.
Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed?
I have gone through many stages such as heavy textures to now a light and zen quality to my work since I have been healing my work has shifted with me as well. I am grateful to go through my emotions as it has helped me to become a better artist and human being. Practicing with an open heart and kindness. I feel we need to spread beauty around especially today as we need it more than ever.
What role do you think the artist has in today’s society?
We have an important role as artist as we need to bring more healing and beauty into the world with our work. I feel that I am making a difference. I desire to see my work in hospitals/health care and also in hospitality.
What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist?
Important to get a mentor and find your network of artists that you love and admire. You need that support to carry you through many years to come.
Does age matter in art? Why or why not?
Not really, I feel that it’s about the work we put out there and also how we feel not our age since our age is just a number. I feel that now I am evolving into becoming a better artist with more experience and that is important.
What can we look forward to from you next?
I am working on a short documentary about my life, it is 15-19 minutes long and we are in the process of finishing the editing. I am excited to share this short film with you. We are planning to submit it to short film festivals. It’s about my life as an artist.
Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life?
As I get older and wiser, I am grateful for becoming more spiritual and practicing daily meditation. I enjoy contributing to my community in new ways. I also love mentoring artists.
