What keeps you excited in the studio?
I love what I do, so just going into the studio makes me happy. If I’m inbetween projects, I’ll sort my fabrics or write in my journal to find inspiration. Just seeing my fabrics gets me excited.
Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed?
I started as an artist later in life, when my kids were little. My techniques have gotten better, and I am more confident in creating new work. My work continues to develop as I search for what I want to do next.
What role do you think the artist has in today’s society?
“Imagine a world without art.” That’s what someone said to me once when I felt like doing art was not important – I wasn’t actively trying to make the world a better place. But that idea resonated with me. Beauty and art are so important to creating a wonderful world. I am lucky that I get to do that.
What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist?
Make art. Keep creating. Listen to what makes you happy when you’re creating – what techniques resonate with you, what ideas do you want to put forth. Make mistakes, and then learn from them. Just make art.
Does age matter in art? Why or why not?
The only time that age matters to me is when I can’t physically do what I want to do. Otherwise, people of any age have the ability to create art.
What can we look forward to from you next?
I’m not sure! I’m in between projects – I’m looking forward to my next big idea. In the meantime, I’ll do some dyeing and surface design on fabric to build my palette. I’ll also continue teaching textile arts.
Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life?
I am grateful that I have something I am passionate about doing. Being older makes me more aware of the preciousness of time. I’m better at really thinking about how I want to spend my life, and how/why I want to make art. Time is finite, so I want to use it the best way I can.
