What keeps you excited in the studio?
The endless possibilities of reshaping familiar objects and childhood iconography into powerful statements that challenge societal norms. I find excitement in the process of transforming something seemingly innocent into a thought-provoking piece that exposes the unsettling realities beneath the surface. The anticipation of how the work will provoke dialogue and reflection keeps me motivated.

Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed?
My work has evolved from more conventional forms of expression to embracing a multi-layered, immersive approach that engages viewers on a deeper level. Over time, I’ve increasingly focused on creating environments that blend playfulness with critical commentary, drawing people in with colorful, familiar imagery before revealing the underlying, often uncomfortable, truths. This evolution reflects my growing commitment to addressing urgent societal issues like gun violence and the desensitization that accompanies it.

What role do you think the artist has in today’s society?
Artists have the unique ability to challenge perceptions, provoke critical thinking, and inspire change. In today’s society, where complex issues are often simplified or ignored, artists can create spaces for meaningful dialogue and reflection. My role seems to be to holding up a mirror to the world, to document and critique the present moment, and to encourage others to see beyond the surface

What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist?
Stay true to your vision, even when it’s challenging or uncomfortable. Art can be a reflection of your deepest convictions, and the more honest and authentic you are in your work, the more powerful it will be. Don’t shy away from difficult subjects—embrace them, and use your art as a tool to explore and address them.

Does age matter in art? Why or why not?
Age doesn’t matter in art; what matters is the passion and perspective you bring to your work. Art is a lifelong journey, and each stage of life brings new experiences and insights that can enrich your creative expression. Whether you’re young and just starting or later in life, your voice is valuable, and your work can have a profound impact.

What can we look forward to from you next?
I’m continually expanding “The New Normal” series, developing new pieces that delve deeper into the themes of gun violence and desensitization. I’m also working on a book titled “American Alphabet: The ABC Book for Change”, which will extend the conversation beyond the gallery walls. You can expect more immersive, thought-provoking installations that challenge audiences to confront the unsettling realities of our time.

Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life?
Still being an artist later in life has given me a greater sense of purpose and urgency. I feel more confident in my vision and more committed to using my art to make a difference. It’s never too late to create work that matters, and I’m excited about the possibilities that lie ahead as I continue to explore and push boundaries in my practice.
