What keeps you excited in the studio?
As a lifelong learner, I love that painting offers me an endless supply of education – in being bold and conquering fear, continuous problem solving, an ever increasing understanding of materials – and the importance of patience, pure joy and gratitude. Daily.
Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed?
Over time, my work has evolved to include a depth and complexity in shape, color and better understanding of light (and other life changing fundamentals) that was not present early on. I have been fortunate to study with several incredibly talented and giving artists – in several different mediums. While my subject matter may change (abstract, landscape, floral, still life), I have found my voice on canvas through years of work, trial and error, and education from my lifelong artist-teachers (now friends).
What role do you think the artist has in today’s society?
Artists hold so many roles: CIO (Chief Inspiration Officer), story teller, historian, dreamer and spreader of hope are just a few of my favorites.
What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist?
Be yourself – be bold! – willingly accept honest and genuine critique, don’t be so damn hard on yourself, paint what is in your heart and “no” really only means you haven’t found the right home or the right people yet – you will! Stay the course despite what will certainly feel like unruly seas ahead.
Does age matter in art? Why or why not?
No. While I can see a noticeable difference in technique in my work that has come from practice/doing over several years, I still often strive to retain the innocence of the artwork of children – I strive for a blend of both. Art lives within – mine has been here forever, I just wasn’t able to pursue it fully until now.
What can we look forward to from you next?
Who knows? That’s the joy of painting for me. Rarely does one get to live in a world of constant growth and creativity – it’s been a delicious path to follow thus far and I can’t wait to see where we go from here.
Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life?
There is no wrong or right – and dream big!
