Mara Zaslove – Art and Cake

October 8, 2024 - Art

Mara Zaslove
Santa Monica, CA
Age 73

What keeps you excited in the studio?
Allowing myself to create and explore my personal expression.

Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed?
Initially, without any training, I picked up a camera and started photographing what I was drawn to. Along the way, I shifted from film to digital and took a course (to get myself to take the camera out of the box)! Since then, I have followed my instincts and found that I have an innate sense for composition. I also have taken a few workshops to hone my skills but primarily, evolved by constantly shooting. As a result, my work has become more refined and my style, more consistent.

What role do you think the artist has in today’s society?
Artists are the conscience of our society and reflect both the beauty and conflict that exists in the world.

What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist?
Allow yourself to experiment without judgement and seek out support to refine your craft.

Does age matter in art? Why or why not?
Through each chapter of one’s life, new insights are gleaned. No matter your age, embracing your passion creates room for exploration and growth.

What can we look forward to from you next?
Having just had cataract surgery, I have had to step away from some of my pursuits. This has given me time re-evaluate and be open to another way of looking at the world. Eventually, I hope to develop a new series and am allowing myself to be patient with this process.

Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life?
Having been a child therapist and retiring earlier than I had anticipated, I just “fell” into photography. I now, can’t imagine my life without it and am constantly intrigued with the world around me. It has allowed me to connect with myself and others in a novel way and brought me tremendous joy.
