Monica Orozco Thaller
Yorba Linda, CA
Age 67
What keeps you excited in the studio?
A blank drawing pad or canvas, a cup of hot coffee and smooth jazz music will transport me into ‘the zone’ of creativity and I just see where I go with it.
Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed?
These days my art is very whimsical and raw and made to please myself. In the beginning I was always insecure and compared my artwork to others but I’ve learned that my art is like my finger print and cannot be compared to anyone else’’s. I am more confident in my style, my technique and I trust my own instincts .
What role do you think the artist has in today’s society?
Artists create the tangible emotion when most people cannot put it into words. It can be influenced by current events, past remembrances or future hopes. As artists, we have a way to channel mere thoughts into a more digestible form, be it poetry, paint, sculpture or even dance.
What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist?
Believe in yourself and understand that we are all individuals and express ourselves as such. There is no right or wrong if you are following your own heart.
Does age matter in art? Why or why not?
I am more comfortable in my art at age 67 than I was at age 27. Perhaps it comes from maturity or perhaps just many years or practice- or maybe both.
What can we look forward to from you next?
I am branching out a bit to fabric art , which is a new medium for me. I am loving the process and it seems as an artist, we never stop evolving in our ability to create.
Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life?
The pace slows down a bit, but that means you have more opportunity to notice the details. I love being over 60!
