What keeps you excited in the studio?
Creating unique images
Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed?
My use of color has changed as has my choice of mediums. I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Disease at 61 and over time my physical abilities have become diminished. Large painted pieces are difficult to create so I have shifted to a smaller scale often utilizing collage, colored pencil and airbrush.
What role do you think the artist has in today’s society?
I believe the artist is the soul of society and because of that we have a profound responsibility to foster empathy and compassion. We are the base of historical reflection, social commentary, cultural influence, and activism.
What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist?
Don’t wait for inspiration just do the work.
Does age matter in art? Why or why not?
Yes, only in the context of physicality. As we age certain things we used to do easily becomes difficult…like building a frame and stretching a large canvas.
What can we look forward to from you next?
More art
Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life?
Yes, there is the sense of limited time left that did exist when I was younger.
