Age 66
What keeps you excited in the studio?
The process of exploration and discovery. Allowing accidents to happen and the unexpected to take me in a completely different direction
Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed?
I’ve been able to incorporate my training as a graphic designer, photographer and illustrator from my earlier years into my process. I do not shy away from trying materials and techniques. I use anything that can shed a light on the concepts I work on.
What role do you think the artist has in today’s society?
Artists are witnesses, are translators, are communicators and are critics. But overall, we are able to synthesize that which the world around us is going through and produce objects that audiences can relate to.
What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist?
Think. Dare to try and fail. Try again. Experiment.
Does age matter in art? Why or why not?
Age provides experience which in reality is defined as the sum of our mistakes. Drawing from those mistakes makes us wiser.
What can we look forward to from you next?
A continued effort to incorporate repurposed materials in my artistic production and explore social and political issues of our times.
Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life?
My practice keeps me grounded, alert and motivated. It connects me both to the world outside the studio as it draws from my formative years. It is a source of constant search and discovery and I find the experience to be invaluable.
