Tammy Greenwood
Temecula, CA
Age 60

What keeps you excited in the studio?
always trying out new techniques and color palettes. You always worry you’ll run out of ideas, but life seems to offer a wellspring of creativity.

Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed?
As with anything we get better with practice and as long as your open to new ideas and are willing to experiment you can hone those skills and continue to flourish.

What role do you think the artist has in today’s society?
The arts open conversations, it brings light to subjects that some may want to avoid. It keeps us aware of the truth and beauty in life.

What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist?
Gather all the knowledge you can, go to galleries, surround yourself with other artists, create your own hive. They will be a constant source of inspiration.

Does age matter in art? Why or why not?
It shouldn’t, but it can to some people. But, that goes for all aspects of life. American culture has always valued youth and virility. There is some truth regarding stamina. That may be the only thing you lose as you get older, the ability to work the long hours in the studio, but the creative edge only gets better.

What can we look forward to from you next?
I want to work on some larger pieces and possibly some sculptural works. I’m very interested in themes of cross-cultures. Most people have roots in several countries and have found ways to blend those cultures in their family celebrations. I’m interested in mixing the mythos of these cross-cultures.

Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life?
Keeping creatively active helps with all aspects of staying young. There’s a level of physical exertion with most mediums as well mental alertness that is necessary. Also, having that close community of fellow artist you’ve gathered for so many years is priceless for mental health.
