What keeps you excited in the studio?
the smell of turpentine, new art supplies, and daydreaming
Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed?
From flailing around as a young artist, to finding a path through surrealism, then developing a lexicon of image symbols—and now I can call up all of this without as much neurotic struggle. Not to say it’s ever easy, but now I’ve ridden this roller coaster for so long that I don’t panic when it dips down—I know it will rise up again and again and again. The work I produce now is more clear, more direct and more confidant.
What role do you think the artist has in today’s society?
Artists are more critical to the survival of our humanity & our souls when the turmoil, hatred, cruelty in the world is so loud, so pervasive as it is now. There have always been these peaks of turbulence throughout history, and what seems to survive is the art. If nothing else, artists provide a respite from that turbulence, a way to see the world differently. Artists can also call out and reveal the sources of this turmoil, demanding accountability. At the very least our role is to continue making art by any means necessary.
What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist?
No matter how much this roller coaster ride scares you with extreme ups & downs, continue making art by any means necessary.
Does age matter in art? Why or why not?
Not really—except for the accumulation of technique, knowledge of various mediums, ability to climb ladders etc.—age isn’t a factor. I’m always about 29 in head! even if my body doesn’t agree!
What can we look forward to from you next?
More art!
Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life?
It’s such a great feeling to look back over the years, the shows, and all the art you’ve produced—like a beautiful trail of gifts dropped randomly in the world.
