‘Euphoria’s Sydney Sweeney & Jacob Elordi Have Dueling TIFF Premieres

September 8, 2024 - Culture

Euphoria‘s Cassie and Nate made a date at TIFF tonight, but like their HBO series characters left off at the end of season, they weren’t in the same building at the same time. That said, actress Sydney Sweeney and actor Jacob Elordi respectively had world premieres going on at the same time with Eden and On Swift Horses.

Known for playing an unhinged guy on Euphoria, Elordi plays a drifter, who initially has a connection with his brother’s wife (played by Daisy Edgar-Jones) before finding true love in Diego Calva’s Henry amid casino poker tables. Meanwhile, Sweeney, isn’t exactly the Euphoria party girl in Eden, but has her fair share of crazy island life ala White Lotus to contend with in the Ron Howard directed survival period thriller. As Margret, Sweeny is the dutiful wife to Daniel Bruhl’s war vet who seeks a better life on a remote Galapagos island. The couple, who have a sickly son, deal with the egomaniac German philosopher, Dr. Friedrich Ritter (Jude Law) and his wife played by Vanessa Kirby in what’s a modern day throwback to Lord of the Flies — but with adults.

Not since Harry Styles came to the Great White North city for TIFF 2022 for My Policeman has there been such a fan frenzy, behold the gush for Elordi below:

If there’s a motif at this year’s TIFF, if anything is going to happen, it’ll happen at an early evening premiere. For following a Pro-Palestinian protest at the Princess of Wales on Thursday opening night, there was a medical emergency at the Roy Thomson Hall premiere of On Swift Horses, with an attendee being carried off on a stretcher. The 5:45PM screening was stopped at 7PM as the lights went up to tend the incident in the orchestra section. The movie resumed after a ten-minute stop. After the screening, TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey told the crowd that the audience member was OK.

Said Elrodi after the screening about his wayward character, “I got to be a cowboy” to great laughs.

“I got the closest to being a road warrior, living in shitty motels and wearing great leather jackets. It’s the closest I felt to American freedom.”

Daisy Edgar-Jone, who with On Swift Horses made her first big splash at TIFF, “It’s not hard to make chemistry with Jacob because he’s so charismatic. Honestly, filming these scenes and the interpersonal dynamics and relationships between them are so subtle and smart; what I loved about this script, it felt like reading poetry; so much what happens is in subtext.”

Sweeney beamed at her premiere, “It’s every actor’s dream to work with Ron. I grew up loving your films, but being able to work with you, I’ve realized what an amazing human being you are. And when Margret came to me, I was absolutely amazed by 1.) It’s a true story and 2.) It wasn’t her choice and she had to follow her husband’s footsteps and she had no idea what she was getting herself into.”

Eden is being sold by CAA with AGC Studios handling offshore sales. On Swift Horses is being sold by UTA Independent Film Group.

Euphoria goes back into production in January. Sweeney has said that she hopes Cassie’s storyline ventures into the darker parts of her personality.
