Jason Momoa has been a rising star ever since he got his big break playing the beefy warrior Khal Drogo in HBO’s acclaimed series, Game of Thrones. Since then, he’s starred as the superhero Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), appearing in both solo and crossover films. He snagged a major supporting role in Denis Villeneuve’s Oscar-winning film, Dune.
His latest release, A Minecraft Movie, based on the popular game, is getting mixed reviews from critics but seems to be cleaning up at the box office. So what’s next for the Hawaiian superstar? Here’s every Jason Momoa project, in both film and television, that will follow the release of A Minecraft Movie.
‘Chief of War’
August 1, 2025
Chief of War is Jason Momoa’s next project. It’s a historical drama miniseries that was co-created by Momoa himself. He will also star in and executive produce the show. Chief of War centers on the unification of the Hawaiian Islands from an indigenous perspective. Momoa plays Ka’iana, a war chief who leads a bloody campaign to unite the warring Hawaiian islands.
It sounds like the perfect project for Momoa, who grew up in Hawaii and has Polynesian blood running through his veins. Chief of War will begin its nine-episode run on AppleTV+ on August 1, 2025.
It was recently announced that Jason Momoa would appear in the DC Universe, but he won’t be returning as Aquaman.
‘Animal Friends’
October 10, 2025
Animal Friends is Jason Momoa’s next film and will be released later this year. Teased as an R-rated adventure road trip, Animal Friends will combine live-action with animation, following two animals who become unlikely friends. It features an A-list cast that includes Ryan Reynolds, Vince Vaughn, Aubrey Plaza, and, of course, Jason Momoa.
With such a comedic cast, we can probably expect a lot of laughs from this one. Think Sausage Party but with live-action thrown and animals into the mix. And hopefully, fewer orgies.
‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’
June 26, 2026
Superhero fans have been eagerly awaiting details on James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe. In January 2023, it was announced that Gunn and company were developing a Supergirl film called Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, based on the comic book miniseries of the same name. It will follow Supergirl as she travels across the galaxy on a murderous quest for revenge. Milly Alcock, the breakout star of HBO’s House of the Dragon, will play the titular character.
Appearing alongside Alcock will be Jason Momoa, making him the only one to survive the DCEU’s destruction. But Momoa won’t be returning as the superhero Aquaman. He will instead be playing the DC Comics character Lobo, though his appearance is being teased as more of a cameo. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be released on June 26, 2026.

Franchise(s)
Dune
The original Dune novel by Frank Herbert has been famously adapted into a blockbuster duology by Denis Villeneuve: 2021’s Duneand 2024’s Dune: Part II. Both films were critical and commercial successes, lauded for their breathtaking visuals, epic scope, faithfulness to the book, and stellar performances.
A third installment is currently in development, based on the second novel of Herbert’s series, Dune Messiah. It will beVilleneuve’s final Dune project. Dune Messiah is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026, though we’ll see if that sticks. Villeneuve took 3 years in between the first two movies. According to rumors, Jason Momoa will be returning, reprising his role as the protagonist’s deceased Swordmaster, Duncan Idaho.
‘In the Hand of Dante’
Release Date TBD
In the Hand of Dante is an upcoming drama based on the 2002 novel by Nick Tosches. This film has been stuck in developmental hell since 2008, ever since Johnny Depp’s production company acquired the rights to the novel. Director Julian Schnabel has been attached to this project since 2011. And in 2023, he was finally able to move this production forward.
The novel interweaves two separate stories into one cohesive narrative: one set in 14th century Italy, where Dante Alighieri is working on The Divine Comedy, and another set in the present-day (2001 at the time), where a fictionalized version of Nick Tosches stumbles upon an alleged manuscript of Dante’s magnum opus. In the Hand of Dante features an ensemble cast. Jason Momoa will reunite with co-stars Oscar Isaac and Gal Gadot, along with Gerard Butler, John Malkovich, and Al Pacino. It does not yet have an official release date.
With a lack of major box office hits to come out in 2025, ‘A Minecraft Movie’ looks to be one the biggest upcoming releases.
‘The Wrecking Crew’
Release Date TBD
The Wrecking Crew is your typical buddy cop movie, combining action and comedy for a casual popcorn flick. It stars Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista, which sounds like a match made in beefy, action-comedy heaven. It follows two half-brothers, a disciplined Navy SEAL (Bautista) and a loose cannon cop (Momoa), who must work together to unravel a conspiracy behind their father’s murder in Hawaii. Momoa also serves as the film’s producer. The Wrecking Crew is currently filming and does not yet have an official release date.
