A Roast of the Year’ Star Defends Blake Lively Joke

December 28, 2024 - Movies

Many people go into any comedy special on Netflix
expecting something a little controversial and edgy, and the streamer’s Torching 2024: A Roast of the Year is no exception. However, one particular joke has stirred up a hornet’s nest online, with supporters of Blake Lively
slamming the special for including a crude joke at the actress’ expense.

The particular moment that some viewers have taken umbrage with involves Hannah Berner, who takes to the stage for her set and makes a joke suggesting Lively could be responsible for a certain c-word trending this year. “I didn’t think Blake Lively was that bad,” she quips. With the special having just dropped on the platform, the timing of it comes just days after Lively launched legal action against her It Ends With Us
costar Justin Baldoni
following allegations of sexual harassment and emotional distress, making it seem a little too close to the bone considering the circumstances.

Berner took to her own social media account soon after the special aired to show support for Lively, and walked-back her joke by pointing out that it was recorded before the recent lawsuit was launched by the actress. She said:

“My joke in the Netflix roast was filmed before news of the lawsuit. To be 100 percent clear, I support Blake xoxo”

Blake Lively’s Lawsuit Has Drawn Many Differing Opinions

On December 20, Lively filed a lawsuit against Baldoni, alleging sexual harassment and a coordinated smear campaign that was meant to tarnish her reputation. The claims against Baldoni include, but are certainly not limited to, his inappropriate behavior on the set of It Ends with Us, changing the script to include additional intimate scenes, and showing off explicit images of women.

In counter to this, Baldoni’s representatives have vehemently denied the accusations, and have said that it is Lively who is attempting to smear her costar’s name. The actor/director’s lawyer has said that the claims made against his client are “categorically false,” and that they will be fighting the lawsuit. That did not stop the fallout of Lively’s action from being instantly seen, with Baldoni being dropped by his talent agency, and having two previously awarded honors for advocating gender equality rescinded.

The wave of support for Blake Lively comes after her filing a sexual harassment complaint against her ‘It Ends With Us’ co-star Justin Baldoni.

Lively has gained the support of many since news of the lawsuit broke, from It Ends with Us costars and Sony Pictures, as well as many prominent celebrities who have all added their weight to the actress’s case. On social media, however, there are plenty who still believe that Lively is to blame as much as Baldoni for what happened during the making of the troubled movie, and they have been very vocal in showing their support for the actor.

In the end, this case is one that is just getting started, and while the ill-timed inclusion of Netflix’s 2024 roast joke has stoked some fires, social media opinions do not really matter in the slightest when a very public court battle could still be on the cards.
