Movies aren’t what they used to be. These days, cinema is oversaturated with blockbusters, sequels, and reboots. But amid all these big-budget spectacles, there is one studio that remains committed to creating art: A24. An independent studio based in New York City, A24 has been a dominant force in the movie industry since its inception in 2012.
The studio has become known for producing and distributing artistic, high-quality, original films. Ex Machina, Room, The Witch, The Florida Project, Midsommar, Uncut Gems — these are all critically acclaimed movies from A24. Many of their films have earned Oscar nominations, with two claiming the Academy Award for Best Picture: Moonlight and Everything Everywhere All at Once. And according to speculation, A24 might just land another Best Picture win with The Brutalist at the upcoming Academy Awards. Let’s now look ahead, past the Oscars, and see what movies A24 has in store for us in 2025.

In Opus, a legendary pop star returns after his mysterious decades-long disappearance and invites a young writer to his remote compound. A thriller with elements of horror, Opus features a talented cast. Ayo Edebiri, who won numerous awards for her performance in FX’s critically-acclaimed series The Bear, stars as the young journalist, while John Malkovich will undoubtedly deliver a creepy performance as the twisted pop star.
Opus will serve as the feature directorial debut for filmmaker Mark Anthony Green. It premiered in the Midnight section at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and will hit theaters on March 14, 2025. But according to mixed early reviews, Opus isn’t shaping up to be like The Witch or Midsommar.

Death of a Unicorn is an upcoming comedy horror movie. You can tell just from looking at its impressive cast: Paul Rudd, Jenna Ortega, Will Poulter, and Téa Leoni. The premise of this movie is unique, creative, and completely absurd. After accidentally killing a real-life unicorn, a wealthy family seeks to profit from its magical properties — until the unicorn’s mate arrives and starts hunting them down.
So, no, Death of a Unicorn isn’t some artsy title with a hidden meaning, like The Silence of the Lambs. It really is about a dead unicorn. Death of a Unicorn will premiere at South by Southwest on March 8, 2025 and will hit US theaters on March 28, 2025.

The Legend of Ochi follows a girl in a remote village, who’s instructed to never go outside after dark because of frightening forest creatures known as the ochi. But when she discovers an abandoned baby ochi, the girl embarks on a quest to reunite the creature with its family. The Legend of Ochi is a fantastical adventure that sounds like Okja meets Gremlins. The ochi even look a bit like Gizmo from the Gremlins franchise. The Legend of Ochi is the feature film debut of Isaiah Saxon and stars some recognizable names like Finn Wolfhard, Emily Watson, and an A24 favorite, Willem Dafoe.
The Legend of Ochi premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 26, 2025. Its theatrical release of February 28, 2025 was delayed due to the Southern California wildfires, which destroyed the director’s home. The film is now scheduled to be released on April 25, 2025 in the US. With its visually stunning landscapes, gorgeous cinematography, and fine-tuned CGI, The Legend of Ochi is shaping up to be a memorable and magical adventure.

Friendship wasn’t produced by A24, but the studio did acquire the US distribution rights, giving it a spot on our list. This movie follows a man‘s struggles to protect his family’s security after a new neighbor moves in, threatening his quiet life.
This may sound like the makings of a horror movie, but Friendship is actuallya comedy. It stars Tim Robinson, Paul Rudd, and Kate Mara and will serve as the directorial debut of Andrew DeYoung. Although Friendship technically premiered in 2024 at the Toronto International Film Festival, it won’t be released theatrically until May 2025.

Sorry, Baby centers on a college professor who’s trying to recover from a sexual assault. It’s the directorial debut of Eva Victor, who also plays the lead role. And apparently, she hit it out of the park.
Like many films on this list, Sorry, Baby premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, where it garnered critical acclaim. A24 didn’t produce the film but acquired the worldwide distribution rights in a heated bidding war. Sorry, Baby will be released theatrically at some point in 2025.
