After the explosive premiere of Boston Blue, Ernie Hudson, who portrays Reverend Peters, revealed which Blue Bloods character he would like to come back to the show. The spinoff of the iconic police procedural drama debuted on October 17, 2025, and received major critical acclaim.
In an interview with Us Weekly, Hudson revealed that he would love to see Tom Selleck return as Frank Reagan, the father of Boston Blue’s protagonist Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg), in some capacity. The actor said that, although he has never worked with Selleck, he has always loved his projects and would like to collaborate with him.
I’d love to work with Tom. I never have. Over the years, I’ve certainly admired his work. I admire his work, and he’s still ready to do whatever.
Much like Hudson, Frank’s return is something that many viewers of the flagship show want to see. While the audience initially took Danny talking to his father on the phone when Sean Reagan (Mika Amonsen) was in the hospital as a positive sign, the actor’s comments seemingly imply that it likely won’t happen in Boston Blue season 1.
However, there is still hope to see Selleck return to the series. After earning a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes (at the time of this article’s publication), the chances of a renewal are extremely high. So, Danny speaking to Reagan might just be the show foreshadowing the character’s return should they get another season.
Along with Wahlberg, Hudson, and Amonsen, Boston Blue will feature both familiar and new characters. The first episode saw the return of Blue Bloods actors Bridget Moynahan as Erin Reagan (Danny’s sister) and Marisa Ramirez as Detective Maria Baez (Danny’s former partner). The series also introduced several actors who are new to the franchise. The cast consists of Sonequa Martin-Green (Lena Silver), Maggie Lawson (Sarah Silver), Gloria Reuben (Mae Silver), and Marcus Scribner (Jonah Silver).
New episodes of Boston Blue will be released on CBS every Friday at 10:00 PM ET and 7:00 PM PT. Blue Bloods is available to stream on Paramount+.
