Inside Out 2 Moves Further up Domestic Box Office Chart

August 5, 2024 - Movies

Summary

  • Inside Out 2 is still going strong on the big screen, out-grossing new films and climbing domestic chart.
  • The sequel surpassed the original’s earnings with impressive slim declines each weekend, surpassing Pixar’s all-time best.
  • The potential is there to climb even higher on the domestic gross chart, possibly beating Jurassic World for 10th place all-time.

Even though it’s been in theaters two months, Disney’s Inside Out 2 is still raking in the cash, as evidenced by the fact that, in its eighth weekend, it out-grossed newcomer Harold and the Purple Crayon. The Pixar sequel netted $6.7 million this weekend, making yet another slim weekend-to-weekend decline of just 22.3%. This puts it at $626.9 million which, according to Box Office Mojo, 12th on the all-time domestic gross chart, a little over $3 million ahead of 2012’s fellow Disney film The Avengers.

That’s not adjusted for inflation, but wildly impressive nonetheless. This is especially true given the fact it’s over $270 million more than the first film’s final domestic gross. It also passed Incredibles 2 last weekend (its seventh) to become Pixar’s highest-grossing film domestically to date. The question is, just how high will it fly from here?

Inside Out 2

3.5/5

Inside Out 2 is the sequel to the 2015 original film, which starred a young girl named Riley with a head full of emotions. – literally. With Amy Pohler as Joy, Bill Hader as fear, Mindy Kaling as Disgust, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, and Lewis Black as Anger, the all-star cast brought to life the emotions that adolescents face as they grow, change, and adapt to new situations. This sequel, currently in development, will bring Amy Pohler back as Joy, with Riley, now a teenager.

Could It Move Up Another Spot?

By this point, Inside Out 2 has, naturally, made the lion’s share of its money on the big screen. But, given the slim drops week after week, it’s not all the way done yet. And, given there aren’t but so many films that have cleared the massive bar of $600 million domestic, the gap between entries on the list above the Pixar sequel are fairly slim.

Inside Out 2 Star Reveals She Pushed Pixar for a Sequel

“When are you guys going to make another one?” was a constant question heard by Pixar from one of Inside Out’s stars after its success in 2015.

Up next is Barbie, which ended its run at $636.2 million. Inside Out 2 will pass it either in a week’s time or a bit after that point. What’s above Barbie? Jurassic World at $653.4 million.

Considering Titanic is above that after a $20 million jump ($674.2 million including its $57.9 million haul courtesy of the 3D re-release in 2012 and the anniversary re-release in 2023), it seems Jurassic World is the last potential title Inside Out 2 could beat. That would put it at 10th place all time, making it an even bigger win for Pixar than it already is. Time will tell if it hits position 10, but suffice it to say it’s going to beat last year’s Mattel juggernaut.
