A new AI-generated concept trailer has imagined what some famous faces would look like in a live-action remake of Toy Story. The subject of live-action remakes of animated movies is constantly throwing up the next piece of childhood memory to be turned on its head – and possibly ruined forever. In the last decade, Disney has been dominating this particular branch of cash-grabbing, by raiding its vaults to turn some of its most iconic animated movies into new live-action versions that are meant to both address issues with inclusion and political correctness of the past and revitalize older franchises with the use of modern technology.
Now, thanks to one of the many AI-wizards of the internet, Multiverse of Movies, everyone can see what a live action version of Toy Story could look like if Chris Pratt took on the role of cowboy sheriff Woody and, in what is actually a genius piece of meta casting, Chris Evans, who starred in the box office bomb Lightyear, became space ranger Buzz Lightyear. The rest of the “cast” includes Emma Stone, Steve Harvey, John Malkovich, and , in another knowing choice, Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie as Ken and Barbie, respectively. Another casting selection of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3’s Will Poulter as Sid lends itself to the many times the actor has been compared to the character in real life.
This is not the first time someone has imagined the Toy Story franchise becoming a live-action movie, but so far – thankfully – the world of Pixar movies has remained confined to animation and there are currently no plans to consider making movies such as Toy Story, Cars, or The Incredibles in a real-world setting.
However, that doesn’t mean that the Toy Story franchise is about to be allowed to just lay there collecting dust. Against all expectations, Toy Story 5 is now in production and will bring back the usual cast of lovable toys for another adventure. While many people believed that Toy Story 3 delivered a perfect ending to the franchise, the toys were back in town for Toy Story 4 in 2019. The movie landed a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, and broke through the $1 billion mark at the box office, but there was almost a sense that Pixar “got away with it” rather than by design, created a universally loved coda to the franchise.
In the last year, Pixar’s parent company, Disney, has made it clear that their focus is turning back to milking their most popular franchises, including Frozen, Zootopia, and Toy Story. While there is little doubt that the return of Tom Hanks and Tim Allen as the voices of Woody and Buzz will be another huge hit, whether it can continue to please audiences and critics is something that we will have to wait until 2026 to find out. We can, though, rest in the knowledge that there will be no live-action Toy Story being created outside the world of YouTube videos for now, and for that we can be a little thankful.
