Neil Gaiman Denies Assault Allegations After Vulture Story

January 15, 2025 - Movies

Following a bombshell Vulture cover story detailing sexual abuse allegations by eight women, Neil Gaiman has issued a statement maintaining his innocence. Gaiman, an acclaimed author who has enjoyed success across a variety of mediums, was first publicly accused of sexual abuse allegations last summer through the Tortoise Media series, The Master: The Allegations Against Neil Gaiman. During the six-episode podcast, five women accused The Sandman author of sexual assault (Gaiman quickly denied those allegations). On Monday, more women came forward via a damning story, There Is No Safe Word, published by New York Magazine’s Vulture.

Gaiman addressed the comments made in Vulture’s report in a post titled “Breaking the Silence,” published on his website. He admits he is “far from a perfect person” and acknowledges involvement with the women interviewed but denies ever engaging “in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone.”

“I went back to read the messages I exchanged with the women around and following the occasions that have subsequently been reported as being abusive. These messages read now as they did when I received them – of two people enjoying entirely consensual sexual relationships and wanting to see one another again.

At the time I was in those relationships, they seemed positive and happy on both sides.

And I also realise, looking through them, years later, that I could have and should have done so much better. I was emotionally unavailable while being sexually available, self-focused and not as thoughtful as I could or should have been. I was obviously careless with people’s hearts and feelings, and that’s something that I really, deeply regret. It was selfish of me. I was caught up in my own story and I ignored other people’s,” Gaiman shares.

While Gaiman says he is learning and doing the work needed to grow, he is adamant that abuse never transpired:

“At the same time, as I reflect on my past – and as I re-review everything that actually happened as opposed to what is being alleged – I don’t accept there was any abuse. To repeat, I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone.”

Neil Gaiman’s Projects Impacted by Recent Wave of Abuse Allegations

Vulture‘s report includes details from eight women, four of whom participated in The Master: The Allegations Against Neil Gaiman. Two women included in Vulture’s report said the abuse occurred with Gaiman’s young son present (Gaiman denies this). One of those accusers also shared that Gaiman’s son began calling her “slave” and demanding she address him as “master,” mimicking his father’s dynamic with his victims.

Gaiman is an acclaimed author known for projects including the comic book series The Sandman, novels like American Gods, and Prime Video’s Good Omens (adapted from the story which he co-wrote with Terry Pratchett; Gaiman also serves as showrunner, executive producer, and has scribed several episodes). In 2023, Gaiman was featured in Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential list, heralded for his remarkable storytelling abilities.

Good Omens will get closure amid the allegations against Neil Gaiman, but it’s not what fans were hoping for.

The recent reports against Gaiman have impacted his projects: Amazon will cease production of the critically acclaimed Good Omens, with a 90-minute final episode to replace a third season. According to reports, Gaiman and his production company are no longer involved with the project (though he did help write the series finale). Disney has halted a planned adaptation of The Graveyard Book. Netflix’s Dead Boy Detectives was canceled in August (the same month allegations began to surface, although it is not believed the series was canceled as a direct result of those reports); the second season of The Sandman is still set to be released on the streamer.
