Netflix’s Live-Action ‘Assassin’s Creed’ Series Recruits Veteran Creative Team

The Assassin’s Creed franchise is getting a redo in live-action, and Netflix has moved quickly to assemble a team of veteran television writers for their upcoming streaming series adaptation. The best-selling action adventure franchise famously got a feature film released in theaters in 2016 starring Michael Fassbender, but it proved to be another misstep in the video game movie genre. The streamer looks to rewrite history with their new live-action series, which will be spearheaded by a Westworld alum.

Nexus Point News (via the Writer’s Guild of America) reports that Roberto Patino, an executive producer for Westworld and the showrunner for HBO’s DMZ, will act as executive producer and co-showrunner for Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed alongside David Wiener (Halo). Joining them is an impressive list of producers and writers, as seen below. As of this writing, it is unclear what stage of development the project is in. However, the upcoming series is being listed for the 2025-2026 season, which could mean Assassin’s Creed is headed to Netflix sooner than many expected.The project was first announced in 2020, but it seems to be finally coming together five years later.

It’s been an uneventful five years for Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed, to say the least. In 2020, a partnership between the streamer and Ubisoft, the game developer behind the hit franchise, was announced. The plan was to develop three different projects, two animated and one in live-action. None have come to fruition to this day. Meanwhile, Jeb Stuart, the former showrunner behind the live-action Assassin’s Creed, revealed that he had departed the series back in 2023. It seems the separation was amicable, while it was clear that writers were still hard at work on the adaptation.

“I think it was a little bit of a move of executives from LA to London, and it allowed the London group who, unfortunately, had to inherit my vision of what it was instead of getting to develop their own vision. So I think that’s fair. I know it’s going to be great whenever it comes out. I think the Ubisoft guys are fantastic. I think it’s a terrific franchise. It was just a good, mutual time to move on for both sides.”
