‘Power Rangers’ With Bryan Cranston & Elizabeth Banks Coming to Netflix

February 19, 2025 - Movies

Back in 2017, Lionsgate released a Power Rangers movie that was part The Breakfast Club coming-of-age story and a bit of the children’s superhero series that most of us grew up with. The end result received mixed reviews from critics, and it generated a so-so box office. This ended plans to launch a series of multiple sequels, but since its release, the film has generated a bit of a cult following, and now that can continue with the movie finding a new streaming home.

According to what’s coming to streaming next month via What’s On Netflix, Power Rangers will be available to stream on Netflix beginning on Mar. 6. Films that are freshly added to the platform tend to perform well, and it’s hopeful that the same will happen to Power Rangers. It deserved better than it received during its initial theatrical run because it’s easily the best Power Rangers movie to hit the big screen, as it attempted to be more than a simple rehash.

Directed by Dean Israelite from a screenplay by John Gatins and a story by Matt Sazama, Burk Sharples and Michele and Kieran Mulroney, Power Rangers follows a group of mixed-matched teenagers who find themselves thrown together after they gain newfound powers. With these new abilities, they are tasked to protect Earth from the reawakened threat of Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks). The film is based on the popular franchise of the same name and stars Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Beck G, Ludi Lin, Bill Hader, and Bryan Cranston, who played Zordon.

Power Rangers Received Mixed Reviews Upon Release

Power Rangers received mixed reviews upon release, registering a 51% on Rotten Tomatoes with a consensus that reads, Power Rangers has neither the campy fun of its TV predecessor nor the blockbuster action of its cinematic superhero competitors, and sadly never quite manages to shift into turbo for some good old-fashioned morphin time.” Despite the reception from critics, the film earned an impressive “A” CinemaScore from opening day audiences.

The Strongest Power Rangers in the Franchise, Ranked

The iconic series has presented viewers with some of the strongest heroes in the action genre.

2017’s Power Rangers wasn’t a total disaster at the box office, but given its budget, it needed to move the needle a bit more. The movie grossed $85.4 million domestically and $142.3 million globally, against a reported budget of between $100 and $105 million. Following the film’s theatrical run, it was reported that the project lost Lionsgate an estimated $74 million when all revenues and expenses were factored in.

The revamped Power Rangers was intended to launch several sequels, but that came to an end following the film’s box office performance. Franchise creator Haim Saban revealed before the film was released that a six-picture story arc was in development, but it never came to be, despite Lionsgate saying that high merchandising sales could make a sequel happen. There were also reports in 2019 that a second reboot was being commissioned, but those plans were scrapped in 2024 when, oddly enough, Hasbro ended its partnership with Netflix.

Power Rangers hits Netflix on March 6.
