Princess Diaries 2 Villain Star Also Wants To Return For Princess Diaries 3

The Princess Diaries 2 star John Rhys-Davies reveals his interest in reprising his role in The Princess Diaries 3. The Lord of the Rings and Indiana Jones star appeared in the sequel released in 2004 as Viscount Mabrey, a member of Genovia’s parliament who plots to steal the crown. To do so, Mabrey tries to manipulate his nephew, Nicholas (Chris Pine), to claim his place on the Throne, before pivoting to embroil Princess Mia (Anne Hathaway) in scandal. Since then, Princess Diaries 3 has been confirmed, although it’s in its early development.

Despite his scheme being exposed to Genovia and his public disowning, Rhys-Davies revealed to Collider that he not only defends his character but hopes to bring him back to try once more to seize power. Rather than returning as a simple MP, the actor suggested Mabrey should’ve aimed higher than that and become Prime Minister.

“Of course I would. I think I should be prime minister. I was going to be prime minister, I should have been prime minister.

Furthermore, Rhys-Davies hopes to reunite with Pine. Despite their character’s poor relationship, he was left with plenty of pleasant experiences with his co-star during filming for The Princess Diaries 2.

But yes, by the way, I introduced my then sixteen-year-old daughter to Chris Pine. Oh dear me. The virtues of Chris Pine are still ringing in my ears. But actually I love the man, he’s wonderful. And he likes Dickens!”

The Second Movie Left Mabrey’s Fate Open-Ended

While Hathaway is the only actor currently confirmed to return for The Princess Diaries 3, Rhys-Davies isn’t the only actor from the series keen to return. His sequel co-star Pine is not only excited to see The Princess Diaries franchise return but is also eager to reprise his role of Nicolas in the sequel and explore what happens next for him and Mia. He even said the following not long after the sequel was announced: “Call Disney. Call Bob Iger! I don’t know anything about it.“

If Nicholas were to return, a Mabrey inclusion would be an ideal addition to the sequel. Despite his plot being exposed and him being locked outside the church, he was still a sitting MP within Genovia’s parliament. While his stance against the changed ascendency law may make him an unpopular MP with a slim chance of retaining his seat, he could still return as a thorn in Mia and Nicholas’ side.

While a new generation may take the focus of a third movie, familiar faces will inevitably return.
