Scream 7 looks to be gearing up to get cameras rolling on the troubled sequel to last year’s hit sixth installment. Returning star Neve Campbell has now shared an update on when filming will finally begin on the movie after numerous delays. The last time we saw Campbell’s Sidney Prescott was in 2022’s rebootquel, suitably titled Scream. But, given an unfortunate contract dispute, both the performer and the iconic character sat out 2023’s Scream VI. But, she’s all set to return for Scream VII as was confirmed back in March 2024.
The seventh installment is set to begin filming before the end of 2024, and one gets the sense it will serve as a culmination of sorts. While discussing her new documentary Swan Song, IndieWire asked Campbell about the upcoming Ghostface movie. And, specifically, if she’s well-versed in who or what is currently trending in the world of horror cinema.
I’m afraid I’m not. I should! I struggle to watch horror movies, I really do. I’ve always felt like it’s just not my thing. I don’t like the experience of sitting and watching and getting scared. Some people really love it, but I also know they can be fantastic.
It’s a mentality that’s certainly never hindered Campbell’s adept nature by starring in them before, though. And, when asked what it feels like to return to the world of Woodsboro and Ghostface killers, she said the following, which will certainly prove to be an encouraging response for (patient) Scream fans:
I’m very, very happy it’s happening. We were supposed to start in September, but we’re going to start in December now because of some scheduling stuff with Kevin and myself and having all that aligned. And actually, I think it’s a good thing, because we’re going to be able to have the time to get it really right. So I’m very excited about it.
Unfortunately, Scream (2022) and Scream VI‘s Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega will not return, even if Campbell is. In the case of Barrera, the studio made the baffling-to-many call to fire her for voicing support for Palestine. And, in the case of Ortega, her departure was swiftly announced after that decision was made. It was a departure played off as something that was determined long before, but raised some eyebrows as a likely solidarity move nonetheless.
As the two most recent chapters proved with their literal inclusion of Billy Loomis, the franchise is well aware of just how poignant and effective the events of the first film were. Yet, one shouldn’t expect more Skeet Ulrich, considering his return was directly linked to the character played by Barrera.

Scream 7 director Kevin Williamson was looking forward to the ‘hour long chase episode.’
Courteney Cox’s Gale Weathers will be back once again, as her casting was confirmed at the same time Campbell’s return was announced. The same goes for Patrick Dempsey’s Mark Kincaid (aka Sid’s husband), who hasn’t been seen since Scream 3. But what will the seventh movie have in store for the trio? We’ll just have to wait and see when the film hits the big screen in, ostensibly, early 2026.
