Sorry Zack Snyder Fans, James Gunn Is Reminding You How the Director’s “Greatest Remake Ever” Put Him Where He Is Today

Since the release of Superman, fans of Zack Snyder and Man of Steel have been filling social media with comparisons, gripes, and complete outrage over what James Gunn has done with the DC franchise. However, Gunn has never been afraid to divert from something popular to do something different, and according to the writer/director, much of that began to take off thanks in part to his involvement in one of Snyder’s best movies.
Although the idea of James Gunn and Zack Snyder having worked together and been friends is something that makes a certain group of people want to go and scrub themselves clean, the truth is that there is no animosity between the paid, and indeed their paths crossed on one of Gunn’s first big successes: as screenwriter on the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead. Just like taking over the DCU, Gunn recalled exactly the same outrage when the remake of George A. Romero’s classic was announced, and controversy just seems to have followed ever since. Speaking to GQ, Gunn said:
“I’d seemed to be at the lightning rod of all this controversy from the beginning, but ‘Dawn of the Dead,’ you know, people found out it was being remade, and there was a petition online to stop the making of ‘Dawn of the Dead’ with hundreds of thousands of signatures.”
Despite the controversy surrounding the remake, the film is regarded as one of the greatest remakes of all time, and that propelled Gunn’s career massively.
“All of a sudden, I’m showing up on Page Six in the New York Post, you know, because of ‘Dawn of the Dead’ as a screenwriter, who, you know, screenwriters, like, aren’t really that well known, especially the guy who just wrote one hit movie.”
James Gunn’s DCU Is Being Fought Against Every Step of the Way
If James Gunn was expecting an easy ride when taking on co-CEO duties at DC Studios with his long-term producing partner Peter Safran, then he would have been sorely disappointed (just to be clear, he was not expecting that at all). From the moment it became clear that there were going to be some big changes around future DC content – particularly the eradication of the DCEU, Henry Cavill, and everything Snyder – a certain corner of the internet became fixated on trying to prove to everyone that Gunn’s DC vision was trash and should be made to flop at every opportunity.
Whether it is posting badly-timed freeze-frames from Superman, editing footage to make it look bad, or just simply finding every negative comment made about the film and amplifying it via crowd-noise on X, Gunn’s DCU has been faced with plenty of push back, but has still forged ahead and had done enough to prove that, with time, things are looking better for the DC brand than there were a couple of years ago.
