From the beginning, The Rising of the Shield Hero sets itself apart from other isekai series. It’s a controversial series about redeeming oneself, finding people who see the most authentic version of a person, and working for a goal greater than revenge. Naofumi doesn’t get sucked into hatred like most others would in his position, making him an interesting isekai protagonist from the start. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime can be funny, serious, and action-packed. Each tone brings a lot to the series and makes it an interesting watch from start to finish. Rimuru is a busy character in his series as well. He starts That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime trying to figure out the world around him. Eventually, he decides to build his own kingdom, ascend to the rank of Demon Lord, and create a peaceful union between humans and monsters alike.

Overlord is one of the best isekai series ever made because of its premise and its execution. Most isekai series send their protagonist to another world and force them into the hero role. These characters are given amazing powers, a lot of responsibilities, and no freedom. Overlord does the exact opposite, giving its main character Ainz Ooal Gown plenty of power to wield however he wants.

Ainz is the titular Overlord. He rules his world how he sees fit, and it’s a lot different from any other protagonist in isekai. He dominates his enemies through fear and force, and it makes Overlord a refreshing isekai series. There aren’t many moments as uniquely brutal as watching Ainz destroy over 100,000 enemy soldiers in an instant, showing off so much power that even the soldiers fighting with him cower in fear.

Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World is one of the darkest anime series ever. It’s easily the darkest isekai series and a show that stands out in the field of lighthearted, humorous competitors. The anime puts a spotlight on Natsuki Subaru, a shut-in reincarnated to a new world and given one of the most bitter-sweet powers in anime. He has the powerful Return by Death ability, giving him the opportunity to come back to life a few hours, or days, before he dies.

It’s a power that gives Subaru a unique opportunity to rewrite history, but it comes at a brutal cost. He constantly dies in gruesome ways, but due to his overwhelming determination to make things right, he always finds a way to persevere. Re:Zero has an incredible story, a huge world waiting to be explored, and some of the most adorable (and dangerous) side characters in anime.
