While we await the triumphant return of Superman later this year, and thus the beginning of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DCU, the franchise is still taking shape. Fans are awaiting news of more characters and who will play them (one of the biggest being Batman), and now, a star of the hit Netflix series The Gentlemen has thrown his (feathered) hat in the ring to star as one of the most beloved street-level superheroes: Green Arrow.
Taking to social media, The Gentlemen star Harry Goodwins is now campaigning to play Oliver Queen, AKA Green Arrow in the DCU, with his post even suggesting that he may have already had meetings with Gunn about the role. “2025 I have big motions…It’s happening,” he said atop an image of the hero wielding his trusted bow and arrow from the pages of DC Comics.
A screenshot of Goodwins’ Instagram story post has since been shared by DCComicsFanBoy alongside an image of the actor who, and this is no exaggeration, looks like the character come to life. An up-and-comer, Goodwins doesn’t have many credits to his name, and Gunn and Safran would be fools not to at least consider him for the part. “WOW! He looks exactly like Oliver I’m not even joking!” said X/Twittter user @milkias_samuel in response to the idea, with @dannywwhi adding, “He definitely has the look. He doesn’t have a lot of acting experience from what I can see but he was in The Gentleman on Netflix. Standing 6’1 and a former model he definitely has the look for Ollie.”
Created by Mort Weisinger and designed by George Papp, Oliver Queen is a wealthy businessman and the owner of Queen Industries who, after a shipwreck, returns to Star City and takes to the streets as the vigilante Green Arrow. Known for espousing socially liberal values, the character would be a great choice to lead the DCU’s smaller, street-level adventures. Much like Daredevil in the MCU.
The character has been adapted in live-action several times before, most famously by Stephen Amell in The CW series, Arrow. The character was almost given his own movie way back in 2008, which would have found the character framed for murder and sent to Super Max prison, where he would have been surrounded by various DC supervillains. Sadly, the project never happened (though it did inspire an arc in Arrow), and remains a major missed comic book movie opportunity.
