Good news, Lara Croft fans. After a successful Season 1, the Netflix animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft is coming back! The series that broke Rotten Tomatoes records for the Tomb Raider franchise will continue to impress fans of the video game series of the same name, as Netflix has officially renewed Tomb Raider for Season 2.
Starting in 1996, theTomb Raider games originally created by British developers Core Design follow the daughter of a renowned and now missing British archaeologist as she takes up his mantle and begins exploring ancient ruins and tombs, of course. The first season of the animated show from Powerhouse Animation captured Croft’s essence in a fresh, new way, by having passionate women create their beloved heroine. Now, the team is back and bringing in another woman to explore Lara’s adventures.
Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft will return for a second season in which the adventurer will team up with her best friend from the games, documentary filmmaker Sam Nishimura, for a new adventure. In the 2013 video game Tomb Raider, the developers explored Lara Croft’s origin story. Sam accompanies Lara on her quest and ends up getting kidnapped, leading Lara on a hunt to save her. Now, the makers of Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft are reuniting the friends for the upcoming Season 2. Netflix took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to announce Sam and Lara’s return, but made sure to let fans know that the two would be embarking on a completely new adventure.
In Sam’s first appearance in the 2013 game, the two friends were on their way to Yamatai, the Sino-Japanese name for an ancient country in Japan, with Lara in search of, you guessed it, a tomb. Their plans are thrown out the window when a storm wrecks the ship they are taking and the two friends are separated. Lara eventually finds Sam only to see she’s made friends with a man named Mathias, who kidnaps the filmmaker after she tells him about the tomb.
Will the two embark on an adventure to Yamatai? Or will showrunner Tasha Huo, a long-time Tomb Raider fan, have something completely new in store for the pair? Lara’s friend also appears in the Tomb Raider Dark Horse comics, so there’s more than just a couple of games’ worth of content to pull from for the upcoming story. With the franchise consisting of 20 games, three movies, the animated Netflix series, and comics, Huo could take the story anywhere she wants to.
Although not all Tomb Raider fans are on board with Lara getting the Netflix treatment, the show still has a chance to rise above audience expectations. It remains unclear which direction the animated show will take the pair, but some fans are excited about the prospect of a new adventure. While we can’t be sure how much of Sam’s original story will make it into the animated show, we can look forward to seeing Sam in a new light.
Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft is a new animated action-adventure series developed for Netflix by Powerhouse Animation (Castlevania, Seis Manos) and Legendary Entertainment. The series is set to pick up after the events of the video game reboot trilogy some time after Shadow of the Tomb Raider, with Haley Atwell voicing the titular globe-trotting protagonist.
