Lauren Schmidt Hissrich recently spoke about how The Witcher’s upcoming conclusion will differ from Game of Thrones’ controversial finale. She explained her approach to ending the Netflix series with a defined roadmap, ensuring the story remains faithful to Andrzej Sapkowski’s original books.
Speaking to Dexerto, the showrunner said she already has the ending planned and confirmed the series will not extend beyond Andrzej Sapkowski’s original books. “No, I think that we lucked out because I said very early on, ‘We’re not going to go past the books,’” she explained. “We have the ending.”
Hissrich added that while Sapkowski’s novels “go a little crazy,” the team has leaned into the author’s fantasy elements to shape the conclusion. “We lean so hardcore into fantasy at the end in wonderful ways that Sapkowski introduced us to,” she said. “So we knew the stories that we needed to end with.”
Reflecting on the process, Hissrich said ending The Witcher felt like an achievement rather than pressure. “There’s always pressure of something ending, but for us it just felt like an enormous celebration,” she said. “A lot of TV shows don’t get the chance to do five seasons, and it’s been such a privilege to be part of it from the beginning and to grow with it.”
She explained that knowing the series’ endpoint from the start allowed the writers to stay faithful to the source material. “Netflix picked up Season 4 and Season 5 at the same time, so we also had to write ourselves to that particular ending,” Hissrich said. “So again, you make choices.”
The Witcher Seasons 4 and 5 were filmed back to back and will adapt the final three novels: Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and Lady of the Lake. Season 4 premieres on Netflix on October 30, introducing Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia following Henry Cavill’s departure.
