Big Fish, one of Tim Burton’s most underrated films, is set to land on Hulu soon. Starting June 1, fans of the Batman and Edward Scissorhands director will be able to stream the beautiful Academy Award-nominated fantasy adventure that moved audiences around the world in 2003. Other films set to be added to Hulu’s library include Mamma Mia!, The Joy Luck Club, and Beasts Of The Southern Wild, among many others.
Big Fish was written by John August, whose script was inspired by the 1998 novel Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions by Daniel Wallace. It stars Ewan McGregor, Albert Finney, Billy Crudup, Alison Lohman, Jessica Lange, Helena Bonham Carter, Marion Cotillard, Steve Buscemi and Danny DeVito. The 2003 film was well-received by critics, and today, it remains Certified Fresh and sits at 73% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Next month, Tim Burton’s drama about the power of storytelling will land on streaming right on time, considering Father’s Day is celebrated on June 15, and the film features a storyline based on a young man’s complicated relationship with his father. Per the official plot synopsis of the film:
Throughout his life, Edward Bloom (Ewan McGregor) has always been a man of big appetites, enormous passions and tall tales. In his later years, portrayed by five-time Best Actor Oscar nominee Albert Finney (Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Erin Brockovich, 2000), he remains a huge mystery to his son, William (Billy Crudup). Now, to get to know the real man, Will begins piecing together a true picture of his father from flashbacks of his amazing adventures in this marvel of a movie.
Despite being known for making films that are over-the-top and almost escapist, Big Fish is one of Burton’s strongest attempts to depart from that style. Yes, it does feature his visual touches, but the narrative doesn’t push towards anything supernatural. It’s ultimately a story about the rocky relationship between a skeptical son and a father who urges him to embrace imagination as the only way to overcome feeling like a big fish in a small pond.
The following paragraphs contain mild spoilers for Big Fish.Tim Burton is not a director known for making films outside the fantasy spectrum. They evoke real emotions from viewers, but it’s often through a unique and surreal spin backed by the director’s signature visual style. Burton’s stories often unfold in absurd and cartoonish settings, revealing the director’s ability to bring to life that which only exists in the deep corners of our imagination.
That being said, Big Fish, as much as it complies with fantasy tropes, is one of the director’s few attempts at making a down-to-earth feature. Particularly in the final act, when Edward Bloom’s legacy is revealed to be a self-designed mythology—one his son has long resented. The deeper truths are well-hidden amid a collection of fantastic stories that will make you feel you’re in the Tim Burton universe, but which inevitably flow into an encounter based on honesty and reconciliation.
