This one continued my own streak of bad luck, and it got to me as I was trying to solve it. To prevent you from having that same fate, I have documented my process and can tell you what not to do, as well as those usual nudges that will help you know what to do. Avoid my mistakes and get this puzzle done.
If you want a fun puzzle that doesn’t take too much effort, the NYT’s Strands game is an exciting one to try out. It’s not usually too difficult, and the puzzle even gives you hints along the way as long as you guess a real word. There is no limit to the number of guesses you can have; You are only limited by the number of hours in a day. Most of the time, it takes around 5 minutes for me to solve, so time running out shouldn’t be a problem for you.

- One category is about things you can do in the same type of location
- One category is about four different types of clothing accessories
- One category is about four words that come after a different word in a phrase – that word is something you can usually find near water

This is probably the category that frustrated me the most. In all fairness, I did forget how the word “peter” as in “petered out” was spelled and it’s usually accompanied by “ed.” I was also very focused on SLIDE as the word that should be here, and it didn’t make sense to me why that wasn’t the answer. I tried a couple of different combinations, always getting “one away” and wondering why I was not getting it. It turned out to be a fairly simple answer, but I’m still a little frustrated about it.

I was able to grab this one, so I didn’t completely wipe out on this puzzle. I did take some time, because, for whatever reason, I didn’t think about WATER as a verb for a moment. However, as soon as I saw it, I had this category and breathed a short sigh of relief. It didn’t last long, but at least I was able to get through this one without too much trouble. The remaining two categories were harder for me and I know why.

I just don’t think about shoes enough, so I was unlikely to get this one from the beginning. My grandmother would have likely recognized this one right away, as she thinks about shoes all the time. But I was at a disadvantage on this one without giving her a call. Even MARY JANE never even popped into my head as a shoe, and I didn’t look at FLAT or SLIDE either. It was interesting because I ended up searching MULE to see if there was another definition, but nothing popped up about shoes at the time.

I never really had a chance with this one, and I had to look up what a sand PIPER was after I was finished. I don’t think I have ever heard it called that, but I was once again unfortunate as my aunt was a birdwatcher and likely would have recognized it right away. Maybe I need to start crowdsourcing my family for Connections‘ solutions when I am working on them. It would likely make it a lot easier, but it might also take the challenge out of it completely.
