He’s back! Channing Tatum will return for the third Magic Mike movie, and he revealed a few details about the latest installment in the franchise.
The actor, 41, announced Magic Mike’s Last Dance in November 2021, sharing an image of the script’s first page via Twitter. “Well world, looks like Mike Lane’s tapping back in,” Tatum wrote alongside the image.
Magic Mike’s Last Dance was penned by Reid Carolin, who wrote both the 2012 original and 2015’s Magic Mike XXL. Director Steven Soderbergh, who helmed the first but not the second film, returns to the franchise for the threequel.
Tatum also tagged streaming service HBO Max, which is where the movie will debut. A release date has not been set.
The films follow Tatum’s character Mike Lane, a stripper who is loosely inspired by the actor’s brief stint as a performer before he found success in Hollywood.
“There are no words for how excited I am to blow the doors off of the world of Magic Mike with Steven, Greg, Reid, and the amazing people at HBO Max. The stripperverse will never be the same,” Tatum said in a statement.
Soderbergh, 58, revealed that the live show in Las Vegas, which debuted in 2017, convinced him to return for the next movie.
“As soon as I saw what Channing, Reid, and the Magic Mike choreographic team did with the live show, I said we have to make another movie,” the director said in a press release. “Mike Lane’s dream of connecting people through dance must be realized!”
Casting has not yet been announced, but the Step Up actor joked about the cast earlier this month. Lenny Kravitz, father of Tatum’s girlfriend Zoë Kravitz, posted a photo showing off his abs that caught the actor’s attention.
“Good god man,” the Alabama native commented on the post. “What are you eating or what’s in the water or the genes. It’s not natural. Do you just do abs like all day?”
The “American Woman” singer, 57, replied, “Dude, I’m just trying to get in the next Magic Mike. Any connections?”
Though casting news hasn’t been released, fans can meet some new Magic Mikes on HBO Max. The third movie’s announcement came before the stripper franchise expanded into new territory: reality TV.
Finding Magic Mike follows 10 men who have “lost their magic,” per HBO Max, and try to get their confidence back by learning the Magic Mike moves. The winner gets to be known as “The Real Magic Mike,” a cash prize and a chance to perform on the Magic Mike Live stage in Vegas. All seven episodes dropped in December 2021 on HBO Max.

No casting announcements have been made yet, but Tatum will clearly return. His former costars seemed to support the announcement. Bomer and Rodriguez commented via Instagram with some clapping emojis while Keough commented, “Wowwww 🔥.”
A release date has not been set, but Warner Bros. announced that the third flick will not be in theaters. It will premiere directly on streaming platform HBO Max.
Yes, everyone is definitely watching for the plot. While details haven’t been released, the title indicates that Tatum’s Mike might be ready to leave the stripper life behind once and for all.
“We are going to change with the times, and I’m not going to do the whole waxing thing. I think I’m just going to go naturale.” Tatum confessed during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in February 2022. “I think we’re going to try to change [the norm]. It’s a new day.”
The Oscar winner told Variety in February 2022 that he was on the fence about returning to the Magic Mike franchise after skipping the 2015 sequel. “I don’t know,” McConaughey said. “I’d have to read [the script] first. It was a helluva lot of fun doing the first one.”
He urged his former costar to get in touch, adding, “Channing Tatum, call me, bro! I haven’t heard from ya!”
Tatum teased in February 2022 that he was already working on the film’s steamy choreography. “I am very sore. There’s a lot of [people] lifting happening, I can say that,” he told E! News at the time. “I’ve been friends with our choreographer Alison Faulk for something like almost 15 years. Making these dances up, like, trying to figure them out with a best friend, you’re just like, ‘No, no, you’ve got to just put your leg here…’ It’s just hilarious.”
“I leave for London tomorrow [to start filming], and it’s going to be pretty bonkers,” Tatum told The New York Times in March 2022. “We’re kind of swinging for the fences — there never needs to be another stripper movie after this one. We’re trying to do a fish-out-of-water story where it’s a reverse-role Pretty Woman story that ends up with a lot of dancing in it.”
“My body aches. We’re in rehearsal with Allison [Holker] right now [which] as tWitch knows it’s very intense,” Tatum told Ellen DeGeneres in March 2022. “But yes, we are deep in it.”
The Step Up actor explained that he has been learning choreography for the film, cycling and dieting to get ready to reprise his role. “It takes a lot longer to get in shape now,” he confessed.
Tatum joked about his weight loss process, saying, “What’s crazy about it is you can spend three months trying to get down to zero percent body fat. Then, you just walk by a cheeseburger at too close of a radius and you feel like it just all goes away. You’re just like, ‘What happened? I didn’t even do [anything]?’ You’re just like, ‘I inhaled 10 pounds somehow.’”
“I was like, ‘Why are we going to make a third one [and] not just go really, really, really for the stars?'” Tatum told Entertainment Tonight in March 2022.
He teased: “We’re gonna go big. I mean, truly, we’re not gonna leave anything on the bench. We’re taking it out, we’re putting it on stage, it’s gonna be wild.”
After Thandiwe Newton was in talks to join as the female lead, the Westworld star was replaced by Salma Hayek in April 2022.
“Thandiwe Newton has made the difficult decision to step away from the production of Warner Bros. Pictures’ Magic Mike’s Last Dance to deal with family matters,” a spokesperson told Variety at the time.
“You’ve seen me dance on stage, but you’ve never seen me give an intimate, straight-up one-on-one lap dance,” Tatum teased to Entertainment Tonight in July 2022. “That’s definitely going to be in the third one.”
The Sparkella children’s book author added that he also participates in a “pretty crazy” opening dance sequence. “We kick it off on a pretty strong level and then at the end, I might do a version of the water dance in the [live] show. There’s a splash zone in the movie, so it’s a ‘for real’ thing,” Tatum told ET.
The first full-length trailer was released in November 2022 and highlighted Mike’s relationship with Hayek’s character. He’s a bartender who reminds her of her passion — with a lap dance, of course. The wealthy socialite brings him to London, where she wants Mike to make audiences feel the way she felt.
Hayek’s daughter asks Mike why he loves her mom. “No one’s believed in me like your mom has,” he says.
“It’s very physically challenging,” the Grown Ups actress told Entertainment Tonight in December 2022 of filming. “My goodness. You just wait to see. It’s just complicated.”
