psychological trauma related to their war

December 22, 2023 - Business Tips

Mental trauma is a common issue that many veterans face after returning from war. According to a study by researchers at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center, killing in war often triggers a moral conflict in veterans that can damage their self-image, relationships, and spirituality. This emotional trauma can compound psychological trauma related to their war experiences, leading to guilt, shame, anger, and isolation ¹. The study also found that killing in combat is linked with PTSD, depression, and suicide ¹.

Survivor’s guilt is another common issue that many veterans face. It is a feeling of guilt that arises when a person believes they have done something wrong by surviving a traumatic event when others did not. This guilt can often follow the veteran home, contributing to PTSD that makes it almost impossible to live a normal, healthy life ².

War conflicts, terroristic acts, and information wars, amplified by technologically developing mass media, the internet and social networks, seem to add to a general feeling of instability and promote more anxiety, covering even wider contingents worldwide ³.

It is important for veterans to seek help from mental health professionals to work through these conflicts. The public and health care workers should allow veterans to express themselves to help them work through these conflicts ¹. The Impact of Killing (IOK) treatment program is one such program that emphasizes self-forgiveness and helping veterans make amends, heal relationships, plan for their future, and move forward ¹.
