Donald Glover’s Next TV Show Is Fixing An Action Movie Mistake From 18 Years Ago

Donald Glover’s next television show after his acclaimed series Atlanta will be a modern remake of the 2005 film Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Donald Glover created and co-wrote the series alongside Francesca Sloane, who wrote three episodes of Atlanta including one of its best episodes, “The Goof Who Sat by the Door” in season 4, episode 8. Glover will star as Mr. Smith alongside Maya Erskine as Mrs. Smith, which is slated to premiere on February 2, 2024 on Amazon Prime Video.

Erskine is best known for her roles in the Hulu comedy series PEN15 (2019-2021), DC League of Super-Pets (2022), and the recent Netflix animated series Blue Eyed Samurai, in which she played Mizu. Besides being an Emmy-winning actor and director for Atlanta, Glover is known for creating the popular Amazon series Swarm as well as starring in Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) as Lando Calrissian and the celebrated comedy series Community (2009-2014) as Troy Barnes.

The original Mr. & Mrs. Smith movie was largely focused on the connection between the two actors, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, especially because the film sparked their Hollywood celebrity romance. Pitt was famously married to Friends star Jennifer Aniston before reportedly falling in love with Jolie while working together on the spy thriller in the summer of 2004. Because of all the tabloid attention and scandalous gossip surrounding Pitt and Jolie, Mr. & Mrs. Smith became a summer 2005 box office hit.

With Donald Glover now at the helm of the television adaptation of the nearly 20-year-old project, the concept can be taken to new heights under his sharp direction and wildly creative writing style. While Mr. & Mrs. Smith was entertaining, it was overshadowed by the tabloid attention and in effect didn’t need to be a “serious” film of the action genre given the star power of its two leads. Glover and Erskine will likely make for a nuanced and comedic pair as they modernize the action-thriller concept for television.

Following the prestigious success of Atlanta, Mr. & Mrs. Smith appears on the surface to be somewhat of an odd choice for the acclaimed actor/director/writer/musician. Glover himself has said that audiences of his upcoming Prime Video series should not be quick to make comparisons to the original film, as it will be very different. Glover revealed to Entertainment Weekly that he hadn’t even seen the original when he signed on to do the project, saying he “didn’t get” the movie when he finally did see it. That alone should make it clear that his Mr. & Mrs. Smith adaption will probably be nothing like the iconic 2005 original.
