Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for House of Guiness season 1.
House of Guinness has debuted to predominantly positive reviews as Steven Knight’s new Netflix series followed up on the success of Peaky Blinders. The show is full of swagger and personality, but despite possessing plenty of strengths, House of Guinness has already repeated one bold decision that made Peaky Blinders season 6 so divisive, and it’s only going to continue.
While period dramas aren’t particularly hard to find these days, something about Knight’s ability to convey notable figures and families in such entertaining ways makes his projects must-see. As a result, House of Guinness has become the perfect Peaky Blinders replacement, and while the streaming hit doesn’t quite hit the same heights, it still acts as a suitable successor.
Unfortunately, there have been some criticisms of the show, such as its historical inaccuracies, alongside House of Guinness season 1’s cliffhanger ending. These critiques may somewhat dent the series’ overall reputation, but its decision to take the story to America could ultimately be what really turns viewers off, especially if Peaky Blinders season 6 is anything to go by.
Birmingham acted as the home of Peaky Blinders and became an iconic location for the franchise, making the switch to America in season 6 controversial, and House of Guinness is already following in these footsteps. The final season wasn’t the first time Peaky Blinders left its main hub, as the gang went to cities such as London and Liverpool throughout the series.
Much of season 6 still takes place in Birmingham, but Peaky Blinders‘ ending did feature plenty of scenes in America due to the growth of Tommy’s empire, and House of Guinness is doing the same thing. Despite being set in Dublin, the new Netflix hit has already branched out into the US as part of the company’s global expansion.
Without making the Irish capital feel as important to the series as Peaky Blinders made Birmingham, fans might respond better to this early switch. However, it remains a huge risk to have such a historical Irish family spend a large amount of time abroad, yet this seems to be the direction House of Guinness is going in, which could be divisive.
Considering Guinness has become a worldwide sensation, it’s hard to imagine America won’t be a constant part of House of Guinness going forward. It’s not clear how long the Netflix show will run, but the US will likely be involved in almost every season as the family attempts to make their alcohol product one of the biggest in the world.
In addition, there are plenty of political elements involved in the narrative, with America acting as a great way to continue making them feel important. Given that House of Guinness‘ filming locations were based entirely in the UK, it makes the inclusion of the US far easier, with the show’s depiction of New York actually being shot in Manchester.
Despite House of Guinness being set in Dublin, season 1 wasn’t filmed in Ireland. Locations like Liverpool, Yorkshire, Manchester, and parts of Wales were used instead.
Therefore, it’s inevitable that the company’s expansion will continue to hit the international market, and this can’t be done by restricting the story to Dublin. As a result, House of Guinness‘ America plot looks like it’s only getting started, and for better or worse, it’ll be an ever-present part of the series’ future.
