June Lockhart has passed away at the age of 100. She was known for her roles in Lassieand the television series Lost in Space, along with the 1944 musical movie Meet Me in St. Louis.
Lockhart died of natural causes on October 23 in her Santa Monica, California home, where her daughter, June Elizabeth, and granddaughter, Christiana, were by her side.
Lockhart was born on June 25, 1925 in New York City. Both her parents, Gene and Kathleen Lockhart, were actors. At 13 years old, her onscreen debut was in the uncredited role of Belinda Cratchit in the 1938 A Christmas Carol movie adaptation, a project that her parents were also starring in. Lockhart’s father played Bob Cratchit and her mother played Mrs. Cratchit.
Several years later, in 1944, Lockhart portrayed Lucille Ballard in the Judy Garland-led movieMeet Me in St. Louis. In 1945, she starred in the film Son of Lassie as Priscilla, the Duke of Rudling’s granddaughter. This came before the Lassie show that would become a defining part of Lockhart’s career and legacy.
In 1958, she joined Lassie during season 5, taking over the role of Paul’s wife and Timmy’s adoptive mother Ruth Martin from Cloris Leachman. She played the role through season 10 in 1964. Lockhart received an Emmy Award nomination for her Lassie performance in 1959.
After Lassie, she went on to star in the CBS science-fiction show Lost in Space. She was a series regular in all three seasons of the original series, which aired from 1965-1968. Her character was a biochemist and mother, Dr. Maureen Robinson, who was stranded in space with her family.
There have since been several iterations of Lost in Space, including a 1998 movie where she had a role as a school principal. A Netflix reimagining of the science-fiction series ran for three seasons from 2018-2021. In Lost in Space season 3, Lockhart can be heard as the voice of a radio communications officer on Alpha Centauri, which became her final role.
Following Lassie and the original Lost in Space, Lockhart also appeared in 46 episodes of General Hospital from1984-1998, along with episodes of Magnum, PI, Full House, Roseanne, 7th Heaven, and Grey’s Anatomy.
Lockhart is survived by Jon Provost, who played Timmy in Lassie. At 75 years old, he is the last surviving member of the show’s main cast.
