Warning! This article contains major spoilers from The Marvels.

Summary

  • The post-credits scene in The Marvels features a cameo from Kelsey Grammer’s Beast, hinting at the arrival of mutants in the MCU.
  • Grammer’s appearance was made entirely in CGI, suggesting logistical reasons for not physically recording the cameo.
  • The crossover between realities in the Multiverse Saga will likely lead to the X-Men universe meeting the MCU, potentially explored in future projects like Deadpool 3.

The post-credits scenes of Marvel Studios films and series have become almost compulsory for the franchise, because they usually include key elements or characters that connect a project with those that follow. And, of course, The Marvels is no exception, and includes a surprising cameo in its post-credits scene, which anticipates the arrival of a popular group of heroes to the franchise.

Since Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire made their shocking appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home to team up with Tom Holland to defeat some of the most iconic villains from the world of Spider-Man and its movies, the MCU has set the bar ever higher when it comes to its cameos. For this reason, the most recent Marvel Studios film includes the participation of a very popular character from the X-Men universe.

Although mutants have not yet been officially introduced in the franchise, many signs of their arrival have already appeared, and The Marvels has the clearest of them. In the post-credits scene of the movie directed by Nia DaCosta, Kelsey Grammer’s Beast make a return to the big screen. But with a catch. In reality, the version that appears in the film is not Grammer himself playing Henry “Hank” McCoy, as the cameo was made entirely in CGI, although Grammer did record the lines spoken by the character.

There are many possible reasons why Grammer was not physically able to record the cameo appearance, especially if the character is to return again, which now seems likely. Whether Marvel Studios added the cameo appearance late in the day, or Grammer was busy working on the revival of Frasier at the time of filming, or it was simply a cheaper option to create the character with CGI rather than put the actor through an expensive and grueling make-up process, the appearance of Beast is just another step on the road to a collision of the MCU and Fox universes in the near future.

What Does that Cameo in The Marvels Mean for the Future of the MCU?

The Marvels hints at The X-Men.
Marvel Studios/20th Century Studios

In the finale of The Marvels, to prevent the border between realities from being broken, Monica is trapped in a reality that is not her own where she meets an alternative version of her mother. In that world, Lashana Lynch is not Maria Rambeau but the superhero known as Binary, and she is inside the X-Men headquarters with Beast, meaning that in that reality the mutants are present.

Now that the MCU is going through the Multiverse Saga, the crossovers between realities are increasingly common, so it is clear that Monica’s journey back to her own universe is going to lead to a point where the world of the X-Men meets the MCU. For now, it is unclear in which upcoming project by Marvel Studios we’ll get to see Monica in this new reality again, but Deadpool 3 could be a good option if it turns out that this the Fox universe that will play an important role in the Merc with a Mouth’s next adventure.
