Air India is perhaps the worst airline when it comes to handling luggage for passengers, and music artist Anoushka Shankar, the daughter of legend Ravi Shankar, has revealed the dark truth through her Instagram profile. The sitar player was very angry, and it is absolutely valid for her to crash out after the ill-treatment of the sitar and breaking the precious instrument that is dear to her.
Multiple Grammy-nominated musician Anoushka Shankar publicly slammed Air India on Instagram, and this damage took place during her recent travel. Air India made sure to charge a handling fee from her, yet offered trashy behavior and treatment to her dear musical instrument, which is her identity. Anoushka was deeply disappointed and expressed how “devastated” she was after finding her sitar in a broken condition. Anoushka and the world are asking the same question: how could they be so careless?

On Wednesday, the sitar maestro expressed her anger on social media, and the news quickly went viral. Air India damaged her sitar during transit, and this is the way Air India handles the luggage and precious belongings for every passenger with zero care and professionalism. The singer has also shown the current condition of the sitar, and it is evidently visible how reluctant the handlers are. Besides, the sitar is a strong, big wooden instrument, and the way it broke, it seems like somebody slammed it on the floor. It is definitely not a mistake but a deliberate choice of reluctance and ill-treatment; a virtue of ‘Air India’.
In the video posted by the artist, Anoushka could be found saying, “First, I was looking at the top of my sitar and I thought it was really out of tune. After I tuned it, I picked it up to play and that’s when I realised…This was my first time flying Air India in a long time. You’re the country this music belongs to. This is the first time anything like this has happened to my instrument in 15 or 17 years.” She showed the sitar and asked Air India, “How have you done this? I have special cases, you charge a handling fee and yet you’ve done this?”
The post on Instagram came with a heartbreaking caption, “Devastated and truly disturbed by @airindia’s treatment of my sitar. How on earth does damage like this happen without willful disregard? It feels especially sad given that I’ve flown Air India after a long time, and it seems an Indian instrument can’t be safe with them- after all the thousand of flights taken on other airlines without even a peg going out of tune.”
While a lot of Indian artists like Vishal Dadlani, comedian Zakir Khan, and many others showed their condolences through comments, this shameful act cannot be rectified, and it only revealed the dark truth of Indian Airlines. The sitar is an Indian Instrument, and its heritage is damaged by its own people.
