During the D23 event, Walt Disney Animation Studios executive Jared Bush officially introduced the acclaimed studio’s newest magical animated movie titled Hexed. This project serves as its first original feature in a long while, following 2023’s musical fantasy Wish, which had a poor box office performance during its theatrical run.
The studio also released the movie’s official title logo and synopsis, teasing a mother-and-son family adventure. It is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters in November 2026.
“The movie follows an awkward teenage boy and his Type-A mom, who discover that what makes him unusual, might just be magical powers that will turn their lives and a secret world of magic, upside down,” reads the official synopsis.
Hexed is directed by Josie Trinidad and Jason Hand. The latter recently co-directed last year’s Moana 2. The movie is produced by Roy Conli and Juan Pablo Reyes Lancaster-Jones. Further details about its voice cast are still under wraps.
This marks Trinidad’s feature-length debut, after previously helming all six episodes of the Disney+ series Zootopia+. Before landing the project, she had been working with Disney since 2009. She was the story artist on multiple popular movies like The Princess and the Frog, Tangled, and Wreck-It-Ralph. Trinidad also worked with Bush on crafting the story for 2016’s Zootopia, in which she was also credited as its head of story, story artist, and the voice of the Landlady.
At the moment, the studio is busy preparing for the impending theatrical release of Zootopia 2 on November 26, 2025. The long-awaited sequel is directed by Bush and Byron Howard from a screenplay written by Bush. Jason Bateman and Ginnifer Goodwin are reprising their fan-favorite roles as Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps, respectively.
