A new update for Big Little Lies Season 3 has been revealed, confirming the latest progress of the acclaimed HBO series’ long-awaited next installment. The darkly comedic drama has been on hiatus since wrapping up its second season in 2019. The first two seasons both received Certified Fresh scores on Rotten Tomatoes.
According to Variety, Big Little Lies Season 3 is now finally in active development at HBO, with Mr. and Mrs. Smith co-creator Francesca Sloane signing on as an executive producer. She is also writing the first episode of Season 3. At the moment, Academy Award winners Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon are the only confirmed cast members set to return. It’s also still unclear if the creative team plans to bring back Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, and Zoë Kravitz’s characters.
Before this, discussions about the show’s future started in 2023, when Kidman teased the possibility of returning for a third season. Since then, Kidman and Witherspoon have been continually hinting at the project’s status.
Big Little Lies follows the lives of five wealthy women who get involved in a murder investigation. The first two installments were led by Kidman as Celeste Wright, Witherspoon as Madeline Mackenzie, Woodley as Jane Chapman, Dern as Renata Klein, and Zoë Kravitz as Bonnie. They were also joined by Meryl Streep, Adam Scott, Alexander Skarsgård, Iain Armitage, and Kathryn Newton.
The series was created by David E. Kelley, based on Liane Moriarty’s 2014 novel of the same name. Kelley, Kidman, and Witherspoon will also serve as executive producers on the new installment. Season 1 won multiple Emmy and Golden Globe Awards, including Outstanding Limited Series.
