Action star Tom Cruise has become synonymous with death-defying action sequences in his films, but one movie in development could prove to be more daring than Top Gun 3, the next Mission: Impossible movie, or any other movie the actor has starred in before. Even though he is now over 61 years old, Cruise continues to push the envelope of what a movie star can do in regard to their own dangerous stunts. Cruise’s real-life stunts and action have been a defining feature of his movies for decades, and his dangerous pursuits are expected to continue in the yet-unconfirmed Top Gun 3.
After the recent success of Top Gun: Maverick and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Cruise is expected to have his hands full with acting and behind-the-scenes roles in the next films in those blockbuster franchises. Tom Cruise does, however, have another movie in the early stages of production, which would make the action set pieces in his recent films look tame by comparison. For the upcoming movie, Cruise and his team have their eyes on going where no Hollywood movie star has gone before – a challenge that far exceeds the ambition of his Top Gun pursuits.
The release date for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two has been moved back to May 23, 2025.
In the early fall of 2022, Universal Pictures announced it had approved a movie to be made by Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman that would actually send Cruise into space. This is something never before done in American movies, but the proposal of Cruise saving the day in space was not an idea that required much debate. The Chairman of Universal Pictures, Donna Langley, confirmed in an interview with the BBC that the studio was on board with the project and its reported $200 million budget:
“Tom Cruise is taking us to space. He’s taking the world to space. That’s the plan. We have a great project in development with Tom that does contemplate him doing just that. Taking a rocket up to the space station and shooting and hopefully being the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station.”
The pitch for the movie is one where most of the plot takes place on Earth, but a dangerous threat requires Tom Cruise’s character to travel into space and accomplish a feat that would save the world. The goal would be to film at the International Space Station and have Cruise be the first civilian to participate in a spacewalk outside the station as part of the film. Tom Cruise recently gave a cautiously optimistic update about his space movie, as there are still many hurdles to clear before the project can begin filming.
If the movie proceeds as expected, Tom Cruise would be the first American actor to film a movie in space. He will not, however, be the first person ever to accomplish the feat. A Russian film called The Challenge has already beat him to that distinction. The Challenge is a film released in April 2023 about a surgeon who is sent to space to try and save an injured cosmonaut. The movie was partially filmed aboard the International Space Station, and is considered the first movie to have scenes shot by a professional filmmaker in space. Over the course of two weeks, Russian cosmonauts and actors worked together to pull off the 35 minutes of film that were eventually used in the final product.
The Challenge was a huge box office hit in Russia, debuting with the highest-grossing opening day in Russian history. The success of that film serves as a financial harbinger of what would be to come if the Tom Cruise space production were to move forward. Considering it would star one of the most famous actors in the world accomplishing a feat no other Hollywood actor has ever attempted before, this ambitious idea would surely be a box office smash, and could become one of Tom Cruise‘s best movies ever. For an actor who has seemingly conquered all the harrowing physical feats on this planet, it only makes sense for him to leave Earth for his most daring adventure yet.
