Any Percy Jackson fans who were disappointed with how the first season of the Disney+ adaptation looked have just been given the best news. The upcoming second season completely changed how Percy Jackson was shot, with a reliance on more practical effects over green screens and the volume stage.
What is the biggest change in Percy Jackson Season 2?
Percy Jackson Season 2 is an adaptation of the second Percy Jackson & the Olympians novel by Rick Riordan, The Sea of Monsters, first published in 2006. While the first season, and the novel it was based on, were primarily set in and around the United States, the new season takes the beloved title character and his Camp Half-Blood allies around the world.
While speaking with Entertainment Weekly about the new Percy Jackson season, executive producer Craig Silverstein was quick to note just how different the two seasons would be, remarking, “This is not a road trip across America in Greyhound buses and stopping at diners and the St. Louis Arch — they sail off the map, straight into the Sea of Monsters, which doesn’t exist. We had to create it at all. We had to make it even bigger.”
Most of the first season of Percy Jackson was shot on “The Volume,” which uses a video wall and virtual technology designed by Industrial Light & Magic to simulate environments indoors. However, with a lot of Season 2 taking place on the water, Silverstein shared that they knew ahead of time that they “weren’t going to be using it as much. That forced us to get practical.”
In the new season, fans will see iconic locations and settings from Riordan’s The Sea of Monsters, like the Princess Andromeda cruise ship housing Kronos’ army and the jungle cave lair of the giant cyclops Polyphemus, brought to life with practical sets, a decision that Percy Jackson co-star Aryan Simhadri revealed makes the whole season feel “a lot bigger [and] a lot more epic.”
The actor, who plays satyr Grover Underwood, added, “All of those aren’t things that you can replicate on a volume stage. Those have to be real. Those have to be grand. And it was just so insane seeing those come to life.”
The first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians is available to stream on Disney+, with the second season slated to premiere in December 2025. A third season is in development.
