The Cooper Family Tree and Character Ages

March 3, 2024 - Movies

The Big Bang Theory‘s popular spin-off series, Young Sheldon, is coming to an end with its seventh and final season. It has been an interesting journey seeing Sheldon’s childhood that led to him being the iconic scientist we know today. There are certain plot points that have yet to be explored, like Sheldon’s father’s death, and we are anticipating an extremely emotional finale. We have gotten to know the Cooper family as if they were our own, and it’s going to be sad to see this sitcom end.

What was supposed to be a show about a younger Sheldon Cooper (as the name applies) ended up being an ensemble sitcom about everyone in the Cooper family. Which was a smart idea, as we get to see how Sheldon’s upbringing really happened through an outside perspective instead of only whenever Sheldon mentions his family members. Also, because of this direction, we get to see more members of his family than in the original show. Let’s get to know the family again before Young Sheldon is over, see their ages currently, and how they are in The Big Bang Theory.

The Cooper Family Tree

The Cooper family tree

Charlie Tucker

Sheldon’s Grandfather, Deceased

Charlie is one of the few characters that are mentioned in both Young Sheldon and The Big Bang Theory, but he never appears in either show. He was married to Connie (Sheldon’s Meemaw) and passed away in 1985. He died around the age of 58 or 59 due to surgery complications (and possible financial reasons for the surgery).

Sheldon was only five years old at the time, and he missed his “Pop-Pop” so much that he tried asking Santa to bring him back. When that didn’t happen, Christmas was soured for the rest of Sheldon’s life until The Big Bang Theory. According to Meemaw, Charlie was stubborn, egotistical, and a narcissist when he was alive. He even encouraged Sheldon’s pursuit into the field of science. Not much else is mentioned of Charlie throughout Young Sheldon, but Sheldon took after his Pop-Pop as he grew older and highly respected him.

Constance “Connie” Tucker

Sheldon’s Grandmother, 70

Connie Tucker, better known as Meemaw, is Mary’s mother and the grandmother of Georgie, Sheldon, and Missy Cooper. She was first introduced in The Big Bang Theory and is described by Sheldon as warm, loving, sweet, wonderful, and wise. She is very protective over Sheldon, as she is one of the few living relatives that he shows no resentment towards. She is his favorite family member.

Throughout the Young Sheldon show, we see that Connie is a more free-spirited older woman (she was 66 in the first season and is currently 70 in season 6 and now 7) with a fun side. She’s also a flirt, seeing how in the first season she tries to date two men at the same time. She even encourages Missy to beat up a kid during baseball when he makes fun of her, and she also has a secret illegal gambling room. Once we see her in The Big Bang Theory, now a woman of about 100 years old, she is more conservative like her daughter Mary.

George Cooper

Sheldon’s Father, 49

George is the husband of Mary and the father of Georgie, Sheldon, and Missy. He was a high school football coach throughout Young Sheldon. During his adolescence, he played football in high school and wanted to play in the national leagues, but got injured pretty badly during his senior year. After high school, he enlisted in the army and fought in the Vietnam War. During this time, he met Mary at a bar and conceived Sheldon’s older brother, Georgie.

To avoid scandal, George married her. This is one of the reasons why Connie and George don’t particularly like one another. In The Big Bang Theory, whenever Sheldon talks about his father, he mentions how often George would drink and how his relationship with Mary was mostly fighting. Though we can see some of those arguments and tension in Young Sheldon, George is smarter than he lets on and cares deeply for his family. He is currently 49 years old in the sixth season, and we know from The Big Bang Theory that he passed away around that age.

Mary Cooper

Sheldon’s Mother, 43

Zoe Perry as Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon
CBS

This 43-year-old devout born-again Christian is Connie’s daughter and the mother of Georgie, Sheldon, and Missy. Currently, in Young Sheldon, Mary is still married to George as his death has yet to happen. She is depicted as a kind, caring, wise, and loving woman to her family, being especially doting to Sheldon. This caused strain on her relationships with Georgie and Missy.

She is a woman of strong faith, which can sometimes lead to her making bigoted comments in both Young Sheldon and The Big Bang Theory. Though her faith was tested in past seasons of Young Sheldon, she still retains it and has grown stronger since. Compared to The Big Bang Theory, Mary’s personality in Young Sheldon shows more of her flaws. Much like Sheldon, she can be mean and controlling and isn’t a big fan of changes. She was 67 in her final appearance during The Big Bang Theory‘s eleventh season.

Within the prequel series Young Sheldon, there are plenty of Easter eggs (some simple, some clever), about The Big Bang Theory.

Georgie Cooper

Sheldon’s Older Brother, 18

CBS

George Cooper Jr (aka Georgie) is the eldest son of George and Mary. He is older than Sheldon and Missy by five years, currently 18 years old in the show’s seventh season. Like his father, Georgie took up playing football during high school but would get frustrated when he messed up or when Sheldon got the attention when his math skills helped their team win. It’s clear that he’s not fond of his younger brother being in the same grade as him. But as Young Sheldon continues, we do see that Georgie is a caring older brother to Sheldon and Missy, often providing them with advice.

He gets more responsible as he gets older, but even more so when he gets an older woman pregnant when he lies about his age (as she did). According to him in his appearance in The Big Bang Theory (48 years old then), he had to step up and take care of things financially and emotionally when his father died and Sheldon went to college. This soured his relationship with both Sheldon and Mary because of favoritism.

Mandy McAllister and Constance Cooper

Georgie’s Wife, 30

Emily Osment and Montana Jordan as Mandy and Georgie in Young Sheldon
CBS

The older woman whom Georgie got pregnant is Mandy McAllister, a 30-year-old woman who met Georgie at Connie’s laundromat-gambling room-hybrid. She is a strong-willed woman who isn’t afraid to speak her mind when she needs to. It’s easy to see why Georgie was so attracted to her. As the two bond, he lies that he is 21 years old, and she lies that her age is 25. They sleep together and reveal their ages later on, with Georgie admitting the truth later than her.

She finds out that she is pregnant with his child, which complicates her plans of having a career and causes more strain on her already estranged family. But Georgie proves to be a supportive and involved father, later agreeing to marry him, which The Big Bang Theory confirms that Georgie marries at 19. There will be a spin-off series centered around their relationship. They have a baby girl and name her Constance after Georgie’s grandmother, Connie.

Sheldon Cooper

CBS

The titular character himself, Sheldon Cooper, is extremely different from everyone else in his family tree. He has an IQ of 187, making him eligible to learn at a high school level during the first season of Young Sheldon (despite being 9 years old) and attend the same grade as his older brother, Georgie. In the current seventh season, he is 15-years-old. As stated before, he takes after his late grandfather, Charlie, with his narcissism and ego, along with his mother’s traits of perfectionism and need for control.

Because of his intelligence, Sheldon sees himself as above everyone in his family, except for maybe his mother and his Meemaw. This personality does not change much as we see his adulthood throughout The Big Bang Theory. Despite his superiority complex, he does express more love and appreciation for his family in Young Sheldon than when he talks about them in The Big Bang Theory. He would later form a unique found family of his own, learn to accept change, win a Nobel Peace Prize, and marry Amy Farrah Fowler at 43.

Missy Cooper

Sheldon’s Twin Sister, 15

CBS

Missy is the twin sister of Sheldon and, technically, the youngest Cooper sibling. She was the only daughter of George and Mary. Missy is the polar opposite of her twin. Unlike Sheldon, Missy is a charming child who likes physical touch, is very friendly, and has a cheeky sense of humor. That being said, she also possesses an attitude, especially towards her parents.

However, she does have a better relationship with George than with Mary. She feels neglected by the majority of people in her family (save for Georgie), which leads to her getting into trouble. She is a clever girl in her own right and is more emotionally involved than Sheldon. In the current season of Young Sheldon, she is 15. In The Big Bang Theory, she has a baby at the age of 43 and gives birth to an unnamed son.
