In one of the most surprising turns, right after the release of the highly anticipated Happy Gilmore 2, the original Happy Gilmore seems to be departing Netflix. The first film is set to leave soon, showcasing a bizarre example of licensing issues in the streaming era.

Why is Happy Gilmore leaving Netflix and when?

Happy Gilmore 2 was released on Netflix on July 25, 2025, bringing back most of the original cast from the movie after a gap of nearly three decades in between. As most would expect, ahead of the second film’s release, Happy Gilmore’s viewership soared, and it ended up scoring a spot in the Top 10 on Netflix.

Yet, due to licensing agreements, the cult movie will depart Netflix on August 1, 2025. A full slate of movies is leaving on the date, but this one title has drawn the most eyeballs.

As the second film just dropped, it was sure to bring in even more viewership to the first one. But it seems something prevented them from getting the license renewed. However, fans will still be able to catch the movie elsewhere.

Where to watch Happy Gilmore after it leaves Netflix

Despite Happy Gilmore leaving Netflix, fans will reportedly still be able to watch it on other streaming platforms. In the U.S., the movie could be available on Hulu and Peacock. (via Forbes)

This means that most likely, it will not become inaccessible, but fans will not be able to watch it on Netflix after August 1. Meanwhile, the second part is exclusively streaming on Netflix now.

Happy Gilmore 2 brings back the iconic Adam Sandler, along with many original cast members like Julie Bowen, Ben Stiller, and Christopher McDonald. The breakout star of The Substance, Margaret Qualley, is also joining the movie.

Stay tuned for more updates on Happy Gilmore 2.
